Supervisors apply for grant

Lauderdale County supervisors will apply to the Mississippi Development Authority for an Investment Partnerships Program Grant of up to $250,000 to help people buy homes.
Supervisors voted to apply for the program following a public hearing Monday.
Jennifer Buford, community development director of East Central Planning and Development, said the county received one of the grants in 2001 and assisted 24 families with $10,000 each to help with home purchases.
Eligibility for the program is based on household income and family size and applicants must be able to obtain other financing from a financial institution, rural development or mortgage company.
Applicants must also complete a home buyer education class.
Buford said the county will be notified by September at the earliest on whether or not the grant application has been approved. If the county is successful in getting the grant, a second public hearing will be scheduled in November and applications will begin to be taken in December.
