A Meridian woman remained in a Jackson hospital today after being found last weekend on a grassy area next to St. Joseph's Catholic Church the victim of an assault.
Detective Deano Harper of the Meridian Police Department said today that no one has been arrested in connection with the assault and that no one is being held for questioning.
Harper said the woman was found about 7:30 a.m. Saturday when "some of the passersby saw her out there in the field laying in the field." St. Joseph's is at 1914 18th Ave.
Harper declined to identify the victim.
He said she is in her 40s and lists a Meridian address. He said she initially was taken to a Meridian hospital and then transferred to a Jackson hospital for additional treatment.
No condition update was available from Harper. Hospitals in Mississippi traditionally do not give patient information to the media without first being provided the patient's name.
Harper declined to give specifics about the assault or what else may have been found at the scene, citing the police investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 485-1860.
