Southern Choctaw opens region play

Southern Choctaw opened its season last week by beating county rival Choctaw County 21-8 in Butler. But Indians head coach Larry Boykin was not that pleased with the effort.
This week, the Indians head to Excel for its Region 1-2A opener. Excel won its opener beating Monroe County-rival Frisco City 33-21.
Southern Choctaw is led by McGrew, a senior quarterback, and fullback Myles Johnson. Linebacker Detric Causey paces the defense.
Hillcrest-Evergreen
at Choctaw County
Still smarting from last week's 21-8 loss to county rival Southern Choctaw, the Tigers will now have to regroup and get ready for their Region 1-4A opener.
Hillcrest-Evergreen comes to Butler on Friday to open region play. This is a new opponent for Choctaw County. Hillcrest had been in Region 2-4A for the past two seasons and before that were a 5A school.
Hillcrest opened its season by edging W.S. Neal out of East Brewton 21-20 in overtime last week. The Panthers are known for having big, physical teams.
Choctaw County is led by defensive end/guard Odell Williamson and linebacker Merrill Johnson, Jr.
South Choctaw Academy
at Jackson Academy
South Choctaw played AISA second ranked Mobile Christian tough before falling 14-7 in the season opener in Toxey, Ala.
The Rebels got a touchdown from Landis Herndon on an 18-yard run. Quarterback Rob Dahlberg kicked the extra point. Herndon led the offense with 82 yards on 11 carries.
Angelo Downing led the Rebel defense with a team high 11 tackles.
Escambia Academy
at Patrician
The Patrician Saints will try to bounce back from last Thursday's 20-15 season opening loss to Clarke Prep.
This week the Saints host Escambia Academy out of Atmore on Friday night at Hannah-Hessellman Field in Butler.
The Saints are led by quarterback Steven Russell and running back Allen Gibson.
Fayette
at Livingston
The Cougars were blanked by 2000 Class 3A champion Aliceville 26-0 spoiling the coaching debut of new Livingston head coach Scottie "Scatter" Jones.
This week, the Cougars are at home against another tough foe in Fayette.
The Cougars are led by quarterback Corey Speight and tight end LaRon Moss.
Sumter County
at Midfield
Arbie Parker's return to Sumter County's head job was a rough one. The Wildcats were whipped by 4A power Demopolis 55-12 in the season opener in Demopolis last Friday.
This week, the Wildcats take on Midfield (0-1). Midfield lost to Class 5A John Carroll out of Birmingham 37-8 last week.
Sumter County is led by quarterback Reynundo Sturdivant and running back Anthony Watkins.
Sumter Academy
at Wilcox
Sumter Academy heads to Wilcox this Friday night.
The Eagles romped past Warrior Academy 39-7 in the season opener last week. The team is paced by running backs Andrew Poole and Chase Schroeder. Defensive linemen John Upchurch and Bip Burage key the defense.
