ECCC hires Betsy Harris as assistant

DECATUR Former Decatur High School and University of Alabama standout Betsy Harris has been named assistant women's basketball coach at East Central Community College.
Harris previously served as an assistant coach at Troy State University in Alabama. She is also a former staff member at the University of West Alabama in Livingston, where her duties included recruiting, scouting, coaching, public relations and serving as a strength coach.
Harris was an All-State performer at Decatur High School and helped lead
the Lady Warriors to the 1990 state championship. She also earned All-South State and All-State honors.
She attended the University of Alabama on a basketball scholarship and led
the Lady Tide to the Final Four in 1994. Honors she received that year included being named on the Final Four All-Tournament Team and her selection as the Most Valuable Player for the Midwest Regional Championship. She was also named second team All-Southeastern Conference.
Harris was regarded as one of the top three-point shooters in college basketball. She holds the record for most three-pointers made in an NCAA Tournament (20-of-40), is Alabama's career and single-game record-holder in making three-pointers, and is the SEC Tournament and single-game record-holder in three-pointers made.
She played four seasons of professional basketball in Spain, Ireland, Sweden, Greece and Switzerland and participated in the WNBA's Detroit Shock training camp.
She is also a former fitness assistant at the Fitness and Wellness Center at Anderson's Hospital in Meridian.
In addition, Harris has several years experience serving as an instructor at various college, high school and junior high basketball camps.
She graduated from the University of Alabama with a bachelor's degree in sports/fitness management and completed a master of arts in teaching from the University of West Alabama.
