Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College head baseball coach Cooper Ferris had come close too many times to let this one get away from his Bulldogs. Seven times since Gulf Coast won the title in 1991, Ferris' Bulldogs had played for the championship of the NJCAA Division I Region 23 Tournament. But each time Gulf Coast came up short. That wasn't to be the case on Sunday. The Bulldogs scored two times in the bottom of the ninth to take a dramatic 4-3 win over Bossier Parish Community College in the title game. Bossier had earned its spot in the final game by beating Jones Junior College 4-3 in an elimination game earlier in the day.

Lightning didn't strike twice in the same place, but it hit exactly the same team. In Monday night's opening game of the AAA-Academy South State Championship series in Mendenhall, Lamar jumped out to a 6-0 lead only to have Simpson rally and win the game, 8-6. The two teams traveled back to Meridian for game two Tuesday night, and the Raiders again streaked out to a 6-0 advantage after for innings. If Simpson was going to win its 23rd consecutive game, it would take some big hitting in the late innings and the Cougars' Chris Dunn was more than happy to oblige. The senior shortstop hit home runs in three consecutive at-bats, including an eighth-inning game-winning solo shot, to power Simpson (27-2) to an 8-7 victory and the series sweep.
NATCHEZ The Big Green Scoring Machine just keeps rolling along. Cathedral High scored four runs in the first inning and six in the fourth inning on its way to an 11-1 win over Enterprise to capture the Class 1A South State championship Tuesday night. Cathedral (28-1) defeated Enterprise 18-9 Saturday in game one. The Green Wave, which had trouble scoring early in its first two playoff series, scored a total of 10 runs in the first inning of both games against Enterprise (15-11).

RAYMOND Meridian High School golf coach Larry Weems wants his players to be optimistically cautious when they take to the course today. But when it all boils down to reality, Weems' squad is exactly where he wants it to be on top. The Wildcats sit atop the 16-team field at the Class 5A State Golf Tournament after one day of competition at Hinds Community College. MHS shot a field-best 304, just ahead of Pascagoula, which fired a 307.
