Scheuermann gets No. 400

Delgado Community College baseball coach Joe Scheuermann got his 400th career win with the Dolphins Friday afternoon with a 5-4 victory over Meridian Community College in the 17th-annual Region 23 Division I Baseball Tournament.
Scheuermann played at Delgado under his father, "Rags."

Division II regional
While the Region 23 Division I Baseball Tournament is taking place at Meridian Community College, the Region 23 Division II regional is being played at Poplarville.
Tournament host Pearl River, 35-10, hosted Holmes, 33-14, and Northwest, 36-9-1, faced Hinds, 28-18, in first-round play on Friday.
The winner of the four-team double-elimination tournament advances to the Central District Super Regional at St. Catherine, Ky., May 16-18. The winner of that series will head to the NJCAA Division II World Series at Millington, Tenn., May 25-June 1.
Pearl River struggled in the MACJC State Tournament last week at Senatobia, going two and out.
Northwest is ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA Division II poll.

Coast wins regional
Gulf Coast went 4-1 to capture the MACJC State/Region 23 Division II Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament last weekend at Booneville.
In successfully defending the titles they won in 2001, the Lady Bulldogs beat Itawamba 15-6, East Central 1-0, and Pearl River to reach the finals. Gulf Coast lost the first title game to Pearl River 5-2 before claiming a 2-1 victory in the last game.
Pearl River went 4-2, beating Mississippi Delta 8-0 and Northeast 13-7 before losing to Gulf Coast. The Lady Wildcats ousted Hinds 1-0 and beat Gulf Coast in the first championship contest before dropping the second meeting 2-1.
East Central went 1-2, beating East Mississippi 8-0 and losing 1-0 to Gulf Coast and 3-0 to Hinds.
East Mississippi lost to East Central before beating Delta and losing to Northeast.

Runs, runs and more runs
Last year's 18-17 Jones victory over Meridian set a record for most combined runs in the Region 23 Tournament history with 35.
The previous mark of 32 was set in a 27-5 Bossier Parish win over Northeast in 2000 and tied the next day in a 20-12 Meridian win over Northeast.

The fewest runs set in the Region 23 Division I Tournament happened in 1993 in a 2-0 Gulf Coast win over Itawamba and was equaled in 1995 in a 2-0 Meridian win over Pearl River.

MCC leads regional wins
Despite going two and out in this year's Region 23 Division I Baseball Tournament, Meridian Community College holds the most wins in the event's 17-year run. The Eagles are 36-14 in the event. Gulf Coast is next at 27-25, while Mississippi Delta entered Friday's late game with Jones with a 23-23 mark. Delgado has a 19-22 showing.

Mississippi Delta and Gulf Coast have the most Region 23 Division I Baseball Tournament appearances as both have played in the event in 15 of its 17 years.
Delgado and Meridian are tied for third with 13 appearances apiece.
