MCC finishes third in Trustmark tourney
Meridian Community College finished with a score of 321 Tuesday in the Trustmark Co-Lin Invitational.
Northwest won the tourney with a score of 313 followed by Hinds with 313.
East Mississippi Community College finished with a score of 353, Pearl River with 340, Itawamba with 321, and Gulf Coast with 317.
MCC was led by Jamie Sullivan with a score of 79 followed by Nicholas Swanner with an 80, Trey Vaughn with an 81, Brandon Laird with an 81, and Chris Davis with an 85.
Meridian will be back in action today at Raymond in the Hinds Invitational.

Lady Cougars clinch 5-3A title
The Newton County Lady Cougars needed nine innings, but they won the Division 5-3A championship with a 7-5 victory at Philadelphia Tuesday night.
Newton County led 4-0 through five innings after scoring three times in the top of the third, but Philadelphia scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and once in the seventh to force extra innings. After both teams got one run in the eighth, Newton County scored twice in the top of the ninth to improve to 27-5 overall and complete league play with a perfect 6-0 mark.
Suzanne Chaney tossed the first four innings for Newton County, not allowing a hit but walking five while striking out six. Lauren Barrett (8-1) threw the next four frames, striking out two and walking two. She allowed all five Philadelphia runs, but still picked up the win. Joy Cavenaugh pitched the bottom of the ninth for a save.
Dominique Mapp had a single and a double for the Lady Cougars, while Cavenaugh and Betsy Clark both had a pair of singles. Newton County had 11 hits.
Mandy Eakes took the loss for Philadelphia as she tossed a complete game. Eakes led the Lady Tornadoes' five-hit offense with a pair of singles.
Newton County hosts Northeast Lauderdale Thursday at 6:30 p.m. before hosting Morton in a doubleheader in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs on Saturday. The first game is set for 4 p.m.
Philadelphia, the 5-3A runner-up, will travel to Richland Saturday for a pair of games in that best-of-three series.

Lady Rockets' Chandler throws no-hitter
Kady Chandler of Neshoba Central's Lady Rockets threw a no-hitter in their 8-0 shutout win over Aberdeen Tuesday in prep softball action.
Chandler stands at 7-4 on the mound for the season.

EMCC splits two with Itawamba
East Mississippi Community College split two games with Itawamba Tuesday in junior college baseball action.
EMCC's Ryan Clay picked up the 7-6 win on the mound for EMCC while Lee Boyd picked up the 7-1 loss to Itawamba.

Central takes win over Sylva-Bay
Central Academy of Macon picked up a 5-3 win over Sylva-Bay Tuesday in prep baseball action.
Tyler Heurkamp grabbed the win on the mound upping his record to 5-3 for the season.
Central was led at the plate by Von Gomel with a homerun and two RBIs, while Tony Sudduth had two hits. Ross Brown had a double and two RBIs.
Central stands at 9-6 for the season as it readies for a home battle versus Kemper Thursday at 3:30.
