    Weems sponsors alcohol screening day
    A confidential alcohol screening will be Thursday as part of National Alcohol Screening Day. Sponsored by Weems Lifecare, the event is from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the center, 1415 College Drive. For information, call 693-1001.
    Make-A-Wish meets Thursday
    The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Mississippi will hold its monthly Meridian volunteer luncheon Thursday, from noon-1 p.m., at Rush Medical Group's sixth-floor boardroom. Reservations are needed by Wednesday. For information, call volunteer coordinator Lynn Conerly at (800) 819-4072.
    Tickets on sale for Art of Love and Hope
    The Art of Love and Hope, a benefit concert to raise money for LOVE's Kitchen and Hope Village for Children, will be Saturday at Union Station in downtown Meridian. The 6:30 p.m. concert will feature the Del Rendon Band.
    VIP tickets are $20 and include a catered reception before the event; general admission tickets are $10. Tickets are available at the Music Emporium, the Sound Shop and the Chunky River Harley Davidson Burell.
    Symphony Orchestra performs Saturday
    The Meridian Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Claire Fox Hillard, will perform Saturday in the McCain Theater in Ivy Hall on the Meridian Community College Campus. A pre-concert lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in the Casteel Gallery. The concert follows at 8 p.m.
    Tickets will be on sale at the door. For reservations or information, call 693-2224.
    Fund-raiser for March of Dimes
    Kandice's Team, a participant in March of Dimes WalkAmerica, will raise money by selling catfish plates from 3:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. April 15 from in the parking lot of Calvary Baptist Church. The food will be prepared by The Back 40 Seafood Restaurant. Plates can be delivered. All proceeds will go to the March of Dimes WalkAmerica.

    MHS Band Boosters to meet
    A meeting of the Meridian High School Band Boosters Association will be 7 p.m. April 25 in the new MHS Band Hall.
    The annual MHS Band Banquet, uniforms and transportation fees for the 2002-2003 school year will be the focus of the meeting. Parents of ninth grade students at Kate Griffin and Northwest Junior High Schools are invited and encouraged to attend.

    MLT holds Spring Variety Shop
    The Meridian Little Theatre Guild will host its Spring Variety Shop from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. April 26 and from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. April 27. Household goods, furniture, lamps, dishes, appliances, linens and books will be on sale. If you would like to donate items for the sale, pick-up service is available. The theatre is on Highway 39 North.

    MPD holds Relay for Life fund-raiser
    The Meridian Police Department's Relay for Life team will sell pulled pork plates April 26 in Dumont Plaza in downtown Meridian. Plates are $5 and will be available from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Delivery of 10 or more plates is available. Fax orders to 484-6812. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
    Sumter Welcome Center celebrates 20 years
    The public is invited to help the Sumter Welcome Center celebrate 20 years of hospitality April 26. The festivities will include a program and open house from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The center is on Interstate 20/59 at the Cuba, Ala., exit.
    Deadline nears for LAWS class
    The Lauderdale Association of Women Shooters class will take place April 20, at 9 a.m., at Bonita Lakes Mall Meeting Place, and April 27, at 8 a.m., at the Firing Range.
    The class covers gun safety, selection, care and legal responsibilities and is conducted by NRA certified instructors. Those attending will have the opportunity to practice shooting skills once a month as member of LAWS.

    March of Dimes WalkAmerica April 27
    Meridian's March of Dimes WalkAmerica is set for April 27. The March of Dimes is looking for new teams. For information or to sign up, call Christi Swalm at (800) 842-5117 or e-mail cswalm@modimes.org.
    Kiwanis schedules barbecue May 1
    The Kiwanis Club of Meridian will hold its annual barbecue May 1, from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., at the Farmer's Market adjacent to Union Station in downtown Meridian. Plates of pulled pork, beans, cole slaw, bread and soft drinks are $6. All proceeds will help support the club's charitable projects.
    Books-A-Million holds special events
    As a part of a special event series, children are invited to participate in the following programs this month at Books-A-Million at 1187 Bonita Lakes Circle. For information, call 482-0760.
    Earth Day events: Learn more about how we need to take care of our planet and what you can do to help. Special crafts and activities. April 20 at 3 p.m.
    Pre-school story time: Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.
    Kids movies: All children are welcome to attend a movie each Friday at 7 p.m.
    10-step guide to Living With Your Monster: From the bestselling author Laura Numeroff, who wrote "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie," comes this story time event about how to deal with monsters. April 27 at 3 p.m.
