Yapping' on animal shelter

A story in Friday's edition indicates that Lauderdale County Humane Society volunteers are back at square one in their goal to establish an animal shelter. After so much time and effort, this is an unfortunate turn of events.
Organizers of the humane society asked the Lauderdale County board of supervisors for a long-term lease on an animal shelter site on Lovers' Lane.
The board was only willing to give a short-term, six-month lease, which effectively makes it impossible for volunteers to renovate, equip and occupy the building as a credible animal shelter.
The humane society needs a building it can use over the long term. Supervisors should be willing to put the Lover's Lane site to such a use and get on with the business of keeping stray animals off the streets.
In other words, the political yapping must come to an end. To express your opinion about the Lauderdale County Humane Society's quest for a permanent home, call 482-9746.
