Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) announces events in celebration of February as Black History Month.

This year’s events include movies, music, an inspirational speaker and a taste of “soul food.”

The NW-SCC Cultural Affairs Committee will hold special programs Thursday, Feb. 20, at 12:15 p.m. in the Student Center on the Phil Campbell campus and Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 12:15 p.m. in the Hospitality House on the Shoals campus.

Each program will include special music by the NW-SCC Chorale & NW-SCC Jazz Ensemble (Phil Campbell campus event only) and conclude with a “soul food” tasting.

Also, Black History Month movies will be shown February 19, 2014, in the Hospitality House and is sponsored by the NW-SCC Student Government Association (SGA) on the Shoals campus.

The Black History program Thursday, Feb. 20, on the Phil Campbell campus will feature keynote speaker, Dr. Samory T. Pruitt, University of Alabama Vice President for Community Affairs. Dr. Pruitt became vice president for Community Affairs on August 1, 2004. Dr. Pruitt is responsible for developing and managing the University’s public outreach programs and providing campus leadership through programming that emphasizes cultural understanding through dialogue. He received his Bachelor of Arts in mathematics, his Masters of Arts in public administration, and his Ph.D. in higher education administration from The University of Alabama.

In 2008, Pruitt was appointed by the governor of Alabama to serve as education chair for the West Alabama Regional Action Commission, which covers six Alabama counties. Dr. Pruitt currently serves as Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Engaged Scholarship Consortium (ESC) consisting of institutions located in the United States, Africa and Canada, and is the publisher of the international Journal of Community Engagement and Scholarship (JCES).

The Black History program Wednesday, Feb. 26, on the Shoals campus will feature keynote speaker, Terrence L. Frazier, Ph.D., Associate Vice President of Student Affairs at Alabama A&M. He is responsible for the development and management of university-wide leadership, vision, and strategic planning. Specifically, he focuses on the integration of learning inside and outside of the classroom. Dr. Frazier has presented at several regional and national conferences and across numerous college campuses, speaking on a range of topics: Diversity, Leadership, Relationships and Greek Life. Frazier recently had the honor of attending the Harvard Graduate School of Education Management Development Program.

Dr. Frazier earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Higher Education from Ohio University. Later at Iowa State, Dr. Frazier earned his Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.
