Tigers end tournament for Vina Red Devils

J.R. Tidwell/FCT Red Bay’s Brett McDowell (24) shoots a lay-up while guarded by Nicky Miller (23) of Vina.

Things just would not go Vina’s way Tuesday night as the Red Bay Tigers beat the Red Devils 77-39, ending Vina’s 2012 Franklin County Tournament on the first night.

“We knew that Red Bay was a better team going in,” Vina head coach Dustin Silas said. “We didn’t have an answer on defense, but I thought our guys played hard.”

The Tigers had a 9-2 lead at the end of the first. Eight minutes later Red Bay had extended that lead to 32-13 at the break.

The Tigers continued to put points on the board, ending up with the 38-point win.

“I thought we played pretty sloppy,” Red Bay head coach Greg Cash said. “We were sluggish because we played Sulligent [the night before.] I was pleased with the effort, though.”

Cole Rooker led the Tigers in scoring with 13 points, with Brett McDowell and Matt Montgomery hitting also double-digits at 11 points each. Also scoring for Red Bay were Austin Sparks (10), Austin Humphres (8), Hunter Childers (7), Austin Malone (7), Ben Hubbard (7) and Tra Elliott (2).

Nicky Miller led Vina with 12 points, with Adam Pharr picking up 11. Tyler Hammock and Drew Hester had 6 points each. Ethan Pharr had 3, and Nick Schmittou picked up 1.
