Toys for Tots drive brightens season for area children

For many families, the holiday season evokes images of twinkling lights, festive gatherings, and the thrill of giving and receiving gifts. Yet, for countless children across northwest Alabama, the holidays can be a stark reminder of financial hardship.

Since 2020, in northwest Alabama, the Marine Corps League Cpl. Matthew D. Conley Detachment #1477 is doing its part to provide good cheer — and hope — to children in poor families who might otherwise be overlooked this holiday season.

What sets Toys for Tots apart is the integral role veterans and their families play in its success. Operated by the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, the program remains closely tied to the Marine Corps Reserve with active-duty Marines and veterans taking the lead in organizing, collecting, and distributing toys.

The impact of Toys for Tots extends far beyond the children who receive gifts. Communities rally together to support the program, with businesses, schools, and local organizations hosting toy drives and fundraising events. This collective effort fosters a spirit of unity and generosity, reminding everyone of the power of coming together for a shared cause.

Moreover, the program provides an opportunity to shine a light on the broader contributions of veterans and military families. By leading initiatives like Toys for Tots, they demonstrate their ongoing commitment to strengthening the fabric of their communities, inspiring others to do the same.

The league’s annual “Toys for Tots” drive kicked off Oct. 1. Volunteers distributed three large red, metal drop boxes that will be set in strategic locations around the Shoals so the public can make donations after businesses are closed. Another 165 cardboard drop boxes decorated with Toys for Tots graphics will be placed in businesses in Colbert, Lauderdale, Franklin, Marion and Winston counties.

Curtis Griffith has led the effort on behalf of the Conley Detachment for the past five years.

He said the local Marine Corps League chapter began assisting the United Way with Toys for Tots in 2019, taking over the program in 2021. Detachment #1477’s track record has been phenomenal since.

In 2024, Toys for Tots assisted 618 families and 1,851 individual children in the program’s five-county area.

In 2023, 487 families and 927 children were assisted in Colbert, Lauderdale and Franklin counties.

In 2022, the group served more than 1,247 families and grew its service area to include Marion and Winston counties.

In 2021, the first year the Marine Detachment took over the program, the group donated to 278 children in Lauderdale, Colbert and Franklin counties.

The needs are great, especially this year in wake of spiraling costs on necessities such as food and utilities. Budgets are strained for families, leaving little behind for Christmas gift spending.

Those who want to donate to the drive, or purchase a toy, can do so by taking advantage of one of the drop boxes that can be found in Russellville, or by calling 256-284-2566 to make arrangements to drop off toys or monetary donations.

We believe the many volunteers of the Conley Detachment #1477 who make Toys for Tots possible year after year embody the true spirit of Christmas. Every gift of a new toy, something most children take for granted, means someone cares, that they haven’t been forgotten, that Christmas hasn’t passed them by.

So, we urge residents in Franklin County to assist with this year’s campaign. Doing so is an easy way to be a community partner with the Marine Corps League Cpl. Matthew D. Conley Detachment #1477.
