4-H team places third in state

RUSSELLVILLE — Franklin County 4-H Horse Club members placed third in the Junior Division at the state 4-H Horse Quiz Bowl in Montgomery.

The quiz bowl is an oral competition where teams answer questions on horse knowledge for points. Braylie Bowling, Karlee Jones and Eliza Beason made up the team.

Braylie Bowling displays her model horse diorama, which placed fifth in the creative arts competition.

Franklin County 4-H agent and co-sponsor Alicia Swann said the team had not competed at that level before.

“They did great to place third,” she said.

Beason said the hardest parts for her were not knowing what questions would be asked and trying to stay confident. She also placed first in color photography for a horse portrait and second in photo picture story, a category that uses multiple images to tell a visual narrative.

4-H agent and club co-sponsor Alicia Swann said the work will be displayed during the Southeastern Livestock Exposition in Montgomery.

Bowling placed fifth in a model horse diorama in the creative arts category, which included more than 165 entries.

Eliza Beason holds her first-place color photography entry, a horse portrait that will be displayed at the Southeastern Livestock Exposition in Montgomery.

Co-sponsor Caleb Beason said the team entered the events with limited experience. “They were intimidated and nervous going into it, but they prepared a lot,” he said. “They’re eager to keep going and do even better next time.”
