OPINION: My Thoughts

He Says

President Donald Trump addressed a joint session of Congress last week. There were very predictable moments and moments that would tug a normal person’s heart strings. The predictable … Republicans applauded every other sentence with a standing ovation, prolonging the speech into the longest in history. Democrats sat on their hands for much of the night. If they weren’t sitting on their hands, they were wagging canes and silly little fans which predictably became the meme of the night. … The most heartwarming part of the night was when a young boy battling brain cancer was awarded a special promotion to the Secret Service. … Policywise, the speech was a hit in post-speech polling. … Democrats better be very careful. On 80-20 issues, they are becoming very adept at siding with the 20% on things like allowing boys and men to play girls sports. … MarchMadnesscontinues to live up to its name. … Alabama returned the favor, beating Auburn in Nevill Arena on a last second floater by Mark Sears. … No harm for Auburn with the number one seed in the SEC tournament and likely a NCAA tournament bid already locked up. … Alabama is a basketball state. … There are 13 teams in the state of Alabama with 20 or more wins — Auburn, Alabama, UNA, UAH, Miles, Samford, Huntington, South Alabama, Montevallo, Faulkner, UAB, Jacksonville State and Troy. … Amazing!

Also, shout out to the UNA Lions! They have had a spectacular season with incredible crowds in Flowers Hall in the past week. … Storms blew through midweek last week bringing down some trees and powerlines. … Much of the area that is east Franklin was without power because the wind was blowing so hard Alabama Power couldn’t send workers up in bucket trucks to repair the lines. The kids at East Franklin Junior High School got a day out of school though. … Remember that asteroid I mentioned a couple of weeks ago? Never mind! Now NASA says it basically has no chance of hitting Earth in 2032. .… Congratulations to the Phil Campbell Bobcats on winning the Franklin County baseball tournament on Saturday. Phil Campbell beat Red Bay 4-3 in a great game by both teams. Koltin Hester for Phil Campbell and Ty Reynolds for Red Bay both pitched complete game gems. … One of the great actors of our time passed away last week. … Gene Hackman was known for many roles but those that stick out in my mind are as Lex Luthor in the original “Superman,” “Unforgiven,” “Hoosiers” and “The Firm” … “Anora” won the 2025 Oscar for Best Movie. … Never heard of it. … Quote of the Week from Dwight D. Eisenhower: “What is important is seldom urgent, and what is urgent is seldom important.”

Have a great week!
