THS boys soccer team has initial season successes

Soccer is underway for players at Tharptown High School. THS soccer coach Darrel Baker said last weekend kept the boys soccer team busy playing in a tournament against Decatur, Mars Hill and Athens.

The THS team: Played Decatur on Friday and won 2-1.

Played Mars Hill on Saturday and won 2-0.

Played Athens later on Saturday, and Athens won 1-0.

“I think our team has a lot of potential,” Baker said. “Soccer shows them discipline. It also shows them how to be successful. You play as a team. You don’t have to have the best player. If you can put together a good team that’s going to work together, that’s how you win.”

Baker said everybody fills a spot on the team, adding it’s important for the team members to understand that and not overplay – not try to do everything themselves, but instead to focus on their particular job, know their role.

“It’s important to do your job and rely on the other parts of the team to do their job,” Baker added.

Baker, who is in his second year as soccer coach at THS, said there are about 20 varsity soccer players this year. The girls team was set to begin playing Tuesday night.
