Opinion page – He Says: My Thoughts

He Says

We expected some winter weather, and we got it! Most everyone in Franklin County woke up to somewhere between three and five inches of snow on the ground last Friday morning. It was a short-lived Winter Wonderland as the snow melted rapidly from the roads by Saturday and was almost completely gone by Sunday. It was fun and pretty while it lasted…

School started, then abruptly stopped again. After two and half weeks out of school for Christmas break, school came back into session for a day and then out again because of the winter weather…

Cancelling or delaying school is not an easy decision. School leaders who have to make these decisions usually can’t win. Whether it is winter weather or potential tornados, leaders have to make decisions with the best possible information at the time. Sometimes weather forecasters miss, and school will be out and nothing happens. Just remember, when the time comes and school has to be cancelled because of weather concerns, school leaders want school to be in session and will only cancel to protect the safety and well-being of students and employees…

The Franklin County Tournament begins this week at Red Bay. Games begin on Tuesday, and the tournament concludes on Saturday. The annual tournament is a great event that brings the county together, although it isn’t nearly as big as it used to be. Barring some upsets, Red Bay’s boys will be favored to win again. Barring upsets, Belgreen and Phil Campbell’s girls should meet in the finals. If they do, it could be a good one. Phil Campbell beat Belgreen on a last second layup in overtime last week at Belgreen… In college basketball, top-ranked Tennessee was blown out by Florida. While second-ranked Auburn barely survived on the road at unranked South Carolina. Welcome to SEC play. Nothing is easy. The Tigers should be the top-ranked team in the nation come Monday but lost their best player, Johni Broome to an ankle injury. There could be as many as 13 SEC teams to make the NCAA tournament this year. It has to be earned every single night…

Meanwhile, the SEC will be absent in the first national championship game of the expanded college football playoff. Beginning with 12 teams, the CFP is down to two, Ohio State vs. Notre Dame. I don’t care for either one. I guess Notre Dame’s quarterback is from Alabama, so I will pull for the Irish. However, it is absolutely unfair for Notre Dame to collect $20 million for themselves since they are not in a conference. They should be in a conference or be barred from the playoff…

Who was the genius that decided the college football national championship game should be played on the same day as the presidential inauguration – Jan. 20. Miserable scheduling mistake…

The NFL playoffs began this weekend as well. Moving on are Houston, Baltimore, Buffalo, Philadelphia and Washington. Minnesota and the Los Angeles Rams played Monday night. Detroit and the two-time defending Super Bowl champions Kansas City had the week off. Super Bowl LIX is in New Orleans Feb. 9.

Gulf of America? 51st State of Canada? Territory of Greenland? Interesting to say the least! Nothing is ever said and amplified without some strategy behind it. It’s not just Donald Trump’s stream of consciousness. Although it sometimes appears that way. The conversation has started…

Finally, the Los Angeles wildfires. Such a sad story. Massive leadership failures all the way around has led to one of the worst disasters in U.S. history. From the governor’s office to the mayor’s office to the fire department, the people of Los Angeles were betrayed by the people they elected to serve them. The Los Angeles area is set to host the Summer Olympics in four years… Will Tik-Tok go dark this week?…

Have a great week!
