Russellville volleyball squad celebrates senior night

The Russellville High School varsity volleyball team celebrated senior night Oct. 1 with matches versus Covenant Christian and Belgreen.

Head coach Madison Lamon and the Golden Tigers honored seniors Kaylee Garner and Haylee Rikard before the match against the Covenant Christian Eagles. Russellville took the first set 25-21 but Covenant won the match 2-1 by taking set two, 25-20, and set three, 15-13.

Russellville’s Fatima Ramirez had six digs, five assists, two kills and two aces. Alexia Groce had six digs and five assists. Blevyn Sappington added 10 digs, seven kills and two serve aces. Rikard had two digs, Laila Hill collected eight kills and two digs and Khristyan Huerta got three digs. Bella Malone had two digs, Bri McCulloch had 15 digs and two aces and Erin Grimes had seven digs and four aces.

RHS then hosted the Belgreen Bulldogs in the final match of the evening. Russellville defeated Belgreen, 2-0, by scores of 25-19 and 27-25.

Groce had 11 assists and two digs while Sappington added eight kills and four digs. Rikard collected two digs, Hill added eight kills and eight digs and Malone had four kills. Fatima Ramirez had four assists, two kills, two serve aces and two digs. McCulloch had 13 digs, Grimes added eight digs, Haylee Patrick got two kills and Lya Ramirez added two digs.

Russellville competed in the West Morgan Invitational Oct. 5. The Golden Tigers defeated Falkville 2-0 and lost 2-0 to both Vinemont and St. John Paul II Catholic.

Belgreen and Phil Campbell squared off for the Franklin County volleyball title in a backand- forth matchup the Bulldogs ended up on top, 2-1. Belgreen jumped out to a big and early lead, but Phil Campbell battled back only to fall, 25-23. The Bobcats dominated the second set, 25-17. In the third and final set, Belgreen built an early lead only to see Phil Campbell come back and build a big lead of their own. The Bulldogs battled back from behind to win the third set, 15-12.

Phil Campbell went undefeated through pool play, never losing a set. They opened up the morning beating Belgreen 2-0 (25-18 and 25-19). They followed with a 2-0 win over Tharptown (25-15 and 25-22) and Red Bay 2-0 (25–22 and 25-23).

Belgreen went 2-1 in pool play with the 2-0 loss to Phil Campbell. They followed that up with a 2-0 win over Red Bay (25-12 and 26-24) and Tharptown 2-0 (26-24 and 25-19).

Tharptown went 1-2 in pool play with a 2-0 win over Red Bay (25-23 and 25-23) and losses to Phil Campbell and Belgreen.

Red Bay was the only team to not win a set or game during the day.
