Golden Tigers sweep Jasper for area series win

The Russellville varsity baseball team improved their record on the season to 14-7 with an area series sweep of Jasper along with wins over Buckhorn and Grissom.

RHS hosted Jasper on March 19, and the Golden Tigers defeated the Vikings by an 18-1 final score in five innings.

The Vikings struggled on defense, committing 13 errors, and Russellville outhit Jasper 12-2. Brandt Cummings, Neyland Baker and Michael Scofield had two hits each to lead RHS. Also hitting safely for Russellville were Daniel Askew, Brennon Thorpe, Brodie Vandiver, Cayden Johns, KJ Murray and Elliott Green. Cummings, Baker and Thorpe all had doubles. Russellville got three RBI from Johns, two from Baker and Scofield and one each from Askew, Cummings, Boutwell, Vandiver, Sappington and Green.

Johns got the start on the mound and went four innings, allowing the lone Jasper run. Eli Boutwell finished the game with one scoreless inning.

Russellville went to Jasper for two games on March 21, and RHS clinched the area series with a 5-4 win in the first game of the day.

The Golden Tigers scored all of their runs in the fourth inning, and the Vikings scored only in the sixth. Cayden Johns led Russellville with two hits, while Askew, Cummings, Vandiver, Scofield and Green had one hit each. Vandiver’s hit was a triple, and the senior had three RBI. Johns had a double and one RBI, and the other RBI came from Scofield.

Tripp Cleveland threw four scoreless innings for Russellville, and Ty Engelthaler worked three innings on the mound, allowing four unearned runs.

The Golden Tigers defeated Jasper in the final game of the series by a 17-4 score. Brandt Cummings went 4-for-5 with five RBI. Neyland Baker, Elliott Green and Michael Scofield had two hits each. Additional RHS hits were by Engelthaler, Thorpe, Boutwell, Devin Green and Cleveland.

Brayden Entrekin pitched four innings, allowing four hits and one run. Gunner Sappington worked one inning for the Tigers.

Russellville visited Buckhorn on Saturday and defeated the Bucks 3-2. The Golden Tigers outhit Buckhorn 12-1.

Baker had three hits while Askew, Elliott Green and Johns had two each. Other hits came from Cummings, Boutwell and Scofield. Boutwell, Green and Johns had the RBI. Brandt Cummings pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run. The right hander struck out eight Buckhorn batters.

The Golden Tigers scored two runs in the top half of the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie to get a 5-3 win over Grissom in the second game on Saturday.

Russellville hits were by Askew, Cummings, Baker, Vandiver, Scofield, Devin Green and Entrekin. The Russellville RBI came from Askew, Vandiver, Green and Entrekin. Baker pitched two scoreless innings, and Boutwell pitched five frames, allowing no earned runs.
