Russellville baseball opens area action against Lawrence County

The Russellville Golden Tigers faced the Lawrence County Red Devils in area baseball action and won two of three games.

RHS hosted Lawrence County March 12, and the Golden Tigers got a 9-3 win. Russellville set the tone early by jumping out to a 5-0 first inning lead. Lawrence County then scored twice in the top of the second on two sacrifice flies. RHS added three more runs in the third inning before the Red Devils scored a run in the sixth frame.

Russellville outhit Lawrence County 9-6 and got two hits each from Brandt Cummings, Brodie Vandiver and Brayden Entrekin. Additional Golden Tigers with hits included Daniel Askew and Eli Boutwell with singles and Neyland Baker with a double. Cummings and Entrekin had two RBI each while Michael Scofield, Gunner Sappington, Boutwell and Vandiver all had one each.

Russellville pitcher Cayden Johns started and went six innings for the win. The senior allowed five hits, struck out two and walked two. Ty Engelthaler worked the final inning, allowing no runs and one hit, while striking out two batters.

The Golden Tigers went to Moulton March 14 for a double header versus Lawrence County, and the Red Devils got a 13-0 win. Caden Norwood helped LCHS to the victory by pitching all five innings and allowing only three hits while also driving home one run with the bat.

Russellville’s hits were by Askew, Vandiver and Sappington. Cummings and Engelthaler did the pitching for Russellville, and Golden Tigers defense committed five errors to none by the Devils.

Russellville grabbed a 6-0 lead in the second game March 14, but lightning forced the game to stop going in the bottom of the fourth inning. The two teams used the artificial turf field at Deshler High School the following day to finish the contest, and RHS got the win by a 6-1 final score.

Russellville (9-7) got two hits each from Daniel Askew and Brandt Cummings. One hit by Askew was a triple, and one by Cummings was a double. Baker, Boutwell, Johns, Scofield, Entrekin and Sappington also had hits. Russellville RBI came from Askew, Cummings, Baker, Johns and Sappington.

Tripp Cleveland got the start on the mound for RHS and went three innings, allowing no runs before the stoppage of play. Entrekin finished the contest with four innings of work. Both pitchers allowed two hits each.
