RCS BOE recognizes Marching Hundred percussion

The Russellville Marching Hundred percussion section has been making itself heard loud and clear. The members received special recognition during the Nov. 29 meeting of the Russellville City Schools Board of Education, honored for winning the 5A Outstanding Percussion Award at the Alabama State Marching Band Competition.

“I’m very appreciative of Mr. Willis and Mr. Stephenson for all they do with our band students,” noted Russellville City Schools Superintendent Dr. Heath Grimes. “I want to thank them for the job they do and for caring so much about their kids and about the program and making sure Russellville shines bright.”

Percussion director Scott Stephenson, who is also the assistant band director, explained the subcategories for judging included content and achievement.

“I think it should also be noted this is the fourth time they’ve had the Alabama State Marching Band Championship,” explained Stephenson, “and we’ve gotten outstanding for percussion three of those times. This is continuing a tradition of excellence.”

The students played boomwhackers to perform a musical piece for the board.

RHS band director Jeremy Willis expressed his pride for the group’s performances and accomplishments.

“I just want to take this opportunity to thank our administration for always supporting us and allowing us the opportunity to do these things for our students,” he said. “A lot of people aren’t as a lucky as we are to have the support we have.”
