Belgreen takes next step toward starting football

Belgreen High School has taken another important step in making football a reality.

The Franklin County Board of Education posted a football coaching position this past week, and a hire could be made as soon as the December board meeting or just after Christmas break at the January meeting. Either way, Belgreen will soon tap someone to lead the startup program.

“We are looking forward to being able to have football at all of our county schools,” said Franklin County Superintendent of Education Greg Hamilton.

Hamilton said Belgreen has already declared intentions to start football next school year to the Alabama High School Athletic Association. The Bulldogs will have to play two years of non-varsity competition before being placed into a region.

“We are starting this program from the ground up,” said Hamilton. “It is not an easy endeavor, but it will benefit the kids at Belgreen by putting them on the same playing field with other schools in the county.”

Belgreen received a private donation this past year to build a football field and track. That project was awarded to Eagle Golf and Athletics, and the groundwork is expected to be complete by Fall 2023.

“We are especially excited about the track,” added Hamilton. “We have a lot of kids in the county who like to compete in track and field, and they have never had a regulation track to compete on. This will benefit all of our students.”
