Belgreen falls to Appalachian

The Belgreen Bulldog boys were swept by the Appalachian Eagles Friday.

The Bulldogs couldn’t get anything going in game one, getting no-hit by the Eagles’ pitching and losing 12-0.

There were no problems scoring runs in game two – by either team. In fact, the two teams combined for 55 runs, setting an Alabama state baseball playoffs record, according to the AHSAA.

Appalachian beat Belgreen 30-25.

Yes, you read that right.

The game was tied 2-2 at the end of the first inning. Belgreen led 6-4 at the end of the second inning.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Bulldogs appeared to have broken the game open, scoring 12 runs and taking an 18-4 lead. The Eagles, however, were not done, scoring five runs in the top of the fourth and eight runs in the top of the fifth to cut Belgreen’s lead to 18-17.

Belgreen responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring seven runs to extend the Bulldog lead to 25-17.

Once again, the Bulldogs seemed to be in position to put the game away with two innings left, which would force a game three Saturday. Appalachian, however, had a run explosion similar to Belgreen’s third inning, scoring 12 runs in the top of the sixth to take the Eagles’ first lead of the game, 29-25.

The Eagles added an insurance run in the seventh to dash the Bulldogs’ hopes and end their season.

Belgreen used six pitchers in the game, with Alex Guidry getting the start and going four innings. Five other pitchers closed out the last three innings.

Carson Cox had three hits and three RBIs and scored five runs. Caige Smith had two hits and three RBIs and scored three runs. Cole King had two hits and two RBIs and scored three runs. Jackson Galliano had three RBIs and scored two runs. Brodie Vandiver scored four runs.

Belgreen ends the season with a 14-12 record.
