RHS softball finishes regular season with eyes on area tourney

The Russellville Lady Golden Tigers wrapped up the regular high school softball season with a busy week on the diamond, including five games in the Northside tournament, before heading into post-season play in the area tourney at West Point.

Rogers 10, Russellville 0

The top-ranked team in Class 4A came to Russellville April 27 and got the win.

Jaiden Calvert doubled for the lone Russellville hit. Summer Butler and Emma Hubbert also reached base via walks. Kailee Simpson, Paislee James and Jacey Moore did the pitching for RHS.

Russellville 8, Mars Hill 3

The Lady Golden Tigers went to Florence and faced No. 4 in Class 2A Mars Hill April 29 and got the victory.

Jenna Whitfield had a home run and three RBIs, and Simpson had two hits and four RBIs, to lead RHS. Fallin Cox and Simpson smacked doubles, and Butler also had a hit, an RBI and three runs scored.

Jacey Moore got the start in the circle and pitched six innings. She gave up three runs and struck out three batters. Simpson came on in relief and pitched an inning, allowing one hit.

Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 16, Russellville 4

For the fourth straight game, going back to the April 26 victory over Hatton, Russellville faced a ranked opponent. This time, the Lady Golden Tigers fell to 6A No. 8 Hillcrest to open the Northside tourney.

Russellville hits versus the Patriots came off the bats of Whitfield, Emma Campbell and Natalie Nichols. Whitfield had an RBI and scored a run, while Hubbert walked twice and picked up an RBI.  Simpson and James did the pitching for Russellville.

Carbon Hill 9, Russellville 8

Nichols had a triple and three RBIs for RHS in the loss to Carbon Hill. Hubbert added a hit, a walk and two RBIs, while Simpson and Moore also hit safely.

Additional RBIs were by Simpson and Campbell.

Doing the pitching for Russellville was Moore, who allowed two earned runs over three innings.

Northside 7, Russellville 3

Northside, ranked fourth in 4A, hosted RHS in the tournament May 1. Simpson had two hits, including a double. Maddy Green, Calvert, Cox and Moore had the other Russellville hits, with Cox and Moore driving in runs. Simpson and Moore combined to do the pitching.

Russellville 6, Carbon Hill 3

Russellville battled back to take the rematch over Carbon Hill at Northside.

Simpson homered and added a single, a walk and four RBIs. She also did the pitching, going five innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits.

Butler, Whitfield and Campbell also had hits for RHS, while Whitfield had two RBIs.

Brookwood 8, Russellville 4

Russellville (17-30) wrapped up play in the Northside tournament with a loss to Brookwood.

Whitfield and Moore had two hits apiece, while Hubbert and Cox each drove in two runs.

Whitfield and Cox had doubles, while Calvert helped out with a single.

Moore pitched all four innings for RHS. She threw 78 pitches and struck out four batters while issuing no walks.
