RHS volleyball team struggles on road in trio of matches

The Russellville varsity volleyball team faced tough competition recently in road matches, losing to Madison Academy, Lawrence County and Muscle Shoals.

Sept. 15 the Lady Golden Tigers went to Madison Academy and fell to the Mustangs 3-0 by game scores of 25-9, 25-9 and 25-12 in a Class 5A, Area 15 match.

Abby Green had 15 assists, a kill and a block for RHS. Jayna Poss had five kills, and Leah Rushing picked up 10 digs and an ace. Anna Beth Oliver had five kills and three digs, while Caroline Sparks had seven kills and two blocks for head coach Whitney Glover’s team.

Lawrence County was the site Sept. 17 for a tri-match that consisted of contests among LCHS, Russellville and the Muscle Shoals Trojans.

RHS fell to 0-3 in area play with a 3-0 loss to Lawrence County.  The Lady Devils swept the match by scores of 25-13, 25-8 and 25-11.

Green had 14 assists, two kills and five digs for Russellville, while Rushing added eight digs. Sparks had eight kills, an ace and two assists, along with three blocks. Olivia Gann pitched in with five digs on defense for the Lady Golden Tigers.

Versus Muscle Shoals, Russellville lost 2-0 by scores of 25-12 and 25-16. Green had 15 assists, while Poss helped out the team with five kills and an ace. Sparks pitched in with eight kills, an assist and two blocks. Rushing had eight digs for the Lady Golden Tigers.

The Russellville team is scheduled to stay on the road until a home match against Haleyville Oct. 1. That meeting is slated to be followed by a contest at Russellville between the Lady Golden Tigers and Madison Academy Oct. 8, then Hamilton comes to town Oct. 13 to finish up the regular season.
