Book Lovers finalize plans for Cancer Walk

The October meeting of GFWC Book Lovers Study Club was held at my house, with Hayley Fuller serving as co-hostess. Club president Patricia Cox called the meeting to order. Members answered verbal roll call with their favorite Halloween candy.

As Home Life chairperson, I presented the institute on Breast Cancer Awareness. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 252,710 new cases are diagnosed in women each year. Pink ribbons were given to each club member as a reminder for them to get annual mammograms, to encourage others and support breast cancer awareness.

An updated report on the club’s Breast Cancer Walk was given by Patricia Cox. The walk will be held Oct. 27 at the RHS Field House Touchdown Club Room. She reminded members that registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the walk begins at 9 a.m. She displayed the items that will go into the goody bags and the T-shirts that will be given to each participant.

Committees met to finalize plans for the registration, the refreshments and the decorations.

Martha Sibley, Tour of Homes chairperson, gave an update on the tour that is planned for Dec. 9. Cheri McCain, Education chairperson, reported on the activities planned for the Russellville Public Library. Hillary Hall, Public Issues chairperson, presented the plans for downtown Christmas decorations. Members approved a $100 donation for these decorations.

A report on the GFWC Alabama North Region District meeting was given. The meeting was held in Decatur, and those attending from Book Lovers were Patricia Cox, Brenda Oliver and myself.

An interesting program on the Neighborhood Christian Center was also presented by Pamela Bolding.
