Russellville Reads: Library gears up for fall festivities
Oct. 6 the library had the privilege of hosting its first Hispanic Heritage celebration.
Educational displays and refreshments were generously provided by the Franklin County Extension office. We had traditional games such as Lotteria, wonderful guest speakers in Alma Martinez and Abigail Tomas and a piñata-making class taught by Shirley Jimenez.
Our library assistant, Perla Marcelo, did a wonderful job of putting together an authentic and interactive set of activities for all to enjoy.
The library was delighted to premier our newly-expanded Spanish collection with items available for checkout.
Thank you to all the local businesses that donated items to the festivities and all of the community volunteers that helped make this event great!
Are you interested in home gardening? Then you’re in luck! Taylor Reeder from the Alabama Cooperative Extension Office will be teaching a three-week fall gardening series beginning Oct. 17 at 10:30 a.m. There’s no need to preregister, so feel free to join us.
The library is getting excited about the change of seasons and all the festivities that come with it. The second Saturday of this month falls Oct. 13, and we will be showing “Hocus Pocus” as our regularly scheduled family movie at 11 a.m. Then Thursday, Oct. 18, at 10:30 a.m., we will be hosting Chris Ozbirn from the Franklin County Archives. She will be covering the history of Franklin County as well as treating us to some spooky good fun as she talks about the art of grave dowsing.
Join us Oct. 20 for the 6th Annual Zombie Walk. We have a professional makeup team to get you zombie ready and will host various activities throughout the day to make the wait more enjoyable such as story time, trivia, a brain eating contest and karaoke. The parade starts at the intersection of Lawrence and Jackson at 6 p.m., so even if acting like a zombie isn’t your thing, feel free to come on out and watch the fun. Prizes will be awarded for best costume!
As many of you know, the library recently had some issues with our ebook platform. We would like you to know that the authentication issue has been resolved, and you should be able to log in without any problems. However, if for some reason you are still not able to access our titles via Overdrive, please give us a call at 256-332-1535.
The library is stocked full of all kinds of goodies for the season. Whether you turn to Hallmark movies or bone-chilling thrillers this time of year, we’ve got you covered with our collection of DVDs. There’s also an abundance of craft, decorating and recipe books for those of you so inclined.
Registration for the Pre-K reading program is still underway. The program is held every first Friday at 10:30 a.m. and includes a story, craft and a snack. Space is limited, and you must register in advance. So don’t delay – get your spot today!
