Club Chronicles: Who are we? Delta Kappa Gamma

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is an international society of more than 76,000 key women educators in 17 countries.

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International was founded May 11, 1929, by the Faculty Women’s Club at the University of Texas, Austin, Texas. Eleven women educators from Texas, representing various professional positions in education, founded DKG. The Society was founded to promote equal status for women, to work for school legislation and to provide financial assistance for women in their educational careers.

Our local DKG Chapter Alpha Upsilon consists of 33 members. Alpha Upsilon is affiliated with the Alabama DKG Beta State organization.

This summer the Alpha Upsilon outgoing president, Debbie Nale, and incoming president, myself, attended the Beta State Officer Training Workshop in Montgomery. More than 180 members attended informative workshops that presented an overview of Chapter Offices and Committees that could prepare members for leadership positions. A highlight of the afternoon meeting was the recognition and presentation of roses to outgoing and incoming chapter presidents and Beta State treasurers.
Alpha Upsilon member and former Beta State President Beverly Donaldson, attended the Beta State Fall Board meeting in Montgomery Aug. 18.  Gayle McAlister has served as Beta State District director and secretary.

Alpha Upsilon officers are Susie Hovater Malone, president; Lori Alford, vice president; Debbie Nale, secretary; Kim Burney, treasurer; and Gayle McAlister, parliamentarian adviser.
