New hobbies: the search continues

It’s been right at one year since this spot on our opinion page served as a platform to share about my lack of hobbies.

As I said then, some of the best magazine or newspaper features center on people sharing about their hobbies. Whether it’s a common activity or something more unique, it’s always interesting to learn about people’s passions, the things they love to pursue in their precious spare time.

I lamented then that my spare time seems to be taken up with washing dishes, doing laundry, grocery shopping and making to-do lists, and I put out the call for new hobby suggestions from our readers. I was determined to make a fresh go at finding a true hobby.

Unfortunately, the search continues.

Lately watching “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” has been the closest thing to a hobby. It’s an exciting way to pass the time! – but at the end of the day, despite the intrigue of the storylines, it’s still just sitting on the couch watching television.

What makes a good hobby? How do you discover something you enjoy so much it’s worthy of your limited time?

I could use some ideas. Tell me all about your passion, what makes you tick – I might even share your thoughts in a future piece on the editorial page. I’d welcome the suggestions. You can reach me at alison.james@fct.wpengine.com.
