Belgreen advances to regionals for second straight year

Mason Bragwell scored 30 points to lead the Belgreen Bulldogs to their second straight Northwest Regional appearance.

The Bulldogs started slow but ended up running away from the Marion County Red Raiders 82-46 in subregion action. Belgreen will face R.A. Hubbard Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville.

“We played some really good defense,” said Belgreen coach Clint Isbell. “We didn’t shoot well from outside, but we made up for it with some great defense, which led to some easy baskets in transition.

“Mason played well inside for us, and Payton (Scott) held their best player to 16 points – it’s good to hold him to that because he averages in the 20s.”

Belgreen just led 12-10 at the end of the first quarter but turned up the pressure on Marion County, extending the lead to 38-18 by halftime. Belgreen took a 58-35 lead into the fourth quarter before outscoring Marion County 24-11 in the final period to blow the game wide open.

Jacob Mayberry and Eli Hiser followed Bragwell with 12 points and 11 points respectively. Scott added nine points, Jake Taylor six points and Caleb Pinkard four points. Brant Bragwell, Gaven Taylor, Seth Taylor, Ashlee Britton and Isac Willingham all had two points each in the win.
