PC council honors Potter

By Bart Moss – For the FCT

The Phil Campbell Town Council honored longtime police chief Merrill Potter at last Tuesday’s council meeting.  Mayor Steve Bell presented Potter a plaque and a Smith & Wesson Bodyguard handgun as a going away gift and expressed words of appreciation on behalf of the council.

“Chief Potter will be missed greatly,” said Bell.  “We appreciate his service to this community, and whoever takes his place will have big shoes to fill.

“He did an exceptional job. He was more than a chief. He was always willing to do more than what was expected of him.

“To do this job for sixteen and a half years and survive several administrations as an appointed employee says a lot about his character and service.”

In other business, the council rezoned property on Pike Avenue to allow for office space expansion. The council voted to have a public hearing to rezone property at the corner of Isom Land and Highway 237 to allow for a convenience store.

“The property is half residential and half business, and the owners can’t get permit until the property is properly zoned,” said Bell.

The council also approved a resolution honoring the Phil Campbell fishing team. The resolution was presented to the team at a celebration cookout at Phil Campbell Memorial Park yesterday.

“We are proud of these students,” said Bell. “It is a great accomplishment, and they are representing our town in a first-class manner.”
