    County teams complete regular season play

    Girls

    Phil Campbell 50, Haleyville 44

    A solid start to both halves gave the Phil Campbell Bobcats a big win over their 4A rival Haleyville last week 50-44. The Bobcats were also able to get the win without the team’s top scorer and rebounder, Abby Davis, who was resting an injured knee.

    Phil Campbell jumped out to an 18-8 first quarter lead. Haleyville roared back in the second quarter outscoring the Bobcats 14-9, giving the home team a 27-22 at halftime. Phil Campbell extended their lead to 42-31 at the end of the third quarter and cruised to the win.

    Darby Elliott led Phil Campbell with 14 points. She was followed by Chloe Roberson with 11 points. Megan Bullock added eight points, Dakota Elliott had seven points, Carley Nix had six points and Bethany Harris four points. The Bobcats hit 12 free throws in the win.

    Red Bay 64, Belgreen 31

    The Red Bay Tigers dominated the Belgreen Bulldogs in their final meeting of the season 64-31.

    Red Bay stormed out to a 20-11 first quarter lead over Belgreen. The Tigers extended their lead to 35-20 by halftime. The Tigers outscored the Bulldogs 23-7 in the third quarter to put the game away 58-27.

    Allie Kennedy and Darby Madden led Red Bay with 20 points and 19 points respectively. Morgan Pierce had eight points, Carlie Lindley added five points, Reagan Kuykendall and Mallori Miller had four points each, and Carlee Humphres and Kaylie Markham scored two points each for the Tigers.

    Emma Dempsey led Belgreen with 13 points. Jasmine Martin had five points, Ansley Tate four points, and Camie Terrell finished with three points. Gabbie Moore, Katie Dempsey and Autumn Bragwell contributed two points each.

    Belgreen 60, Colbert Heights 53

    The Belgreen Bulldogs were able to withstand a strong start by the Colbert Heights Wildcats to get a 60-53 win last week. The Bulldogs were also able to overcome a sluggish performance in the fourth quarter, going 5-for-11 from the free throw line and making no shots from the field.

    Colbert Heights outscored Belgreen 20-16 in the first quarter. Belgreen, however, would control much of the remainder of the game. The Bulldogs outpaced the Wildcats 21-7 in the second quarter to take a 37-27 halftime lead. Belgreen extended their lead to 55-42 at the end of the third quarter. Colbert Heights made a run at the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter, outscoring Belgreen 11-5. Belgreen was able to hang on for the win.

    Jasmine Martin led Belgreen with 21 points. Gabbie Moore had 14 points and Emma Dempsey 11 points. Brianna Wood scored nine points, Katie Dempsey four points and Shellie Barber one point.

    Emma James led Colbert Heights with 29 points.

    Belgreen 65, Covenant Christian 38

    The Belgreen Bulldogs hit 13 three pointers against Covenant Christian’s two-three zone, leading to a very comfortable 65-38 win.

     

    Belgreen led Covenant Christian 12-6 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams played even in the second quarter to make the score 27-27 Belgreen at halftime. The Bulldogs, however, dominated the second half outscoring Covenant Christian 38-18 to get the win.

    Autumn Bragwell led the Bulldogs with 17 points, hitting five three pointers. Gabbie Moore and Emma Dempsey added 12 points each. Shellie Barber hit 11 points. Brianna Wood finished with six points, Jasmine Martin had three points and Camie Terrell and Megan Smith had two points each.

    Vina 67, Hubbertville 26

    The Vina Red Devils picked up their 20th win last week, the first time they’ve reached that mark since 1993. The Red Devils led 13-2 after first quarter and extended their lead to 29-10 at halftime. The third quarter was all Vina as the Lady Red Devils scored 28 points to take a 57-17 lead and easily cruise to the 67-26 win.

    Abby Hester reached a milestone as she scored her 1,000 career point in the win. She had 983 points going into the game and scored 13 points in the first half, nailing three threes to cross the threshold. Hubbertville double-teamed Hester in the third period, allowing Hester to get to the free throw line several times. Hester made ten free throws in the game to give her 1004 points for her career.

    Kaitlyn King hit two three pointers for the night and finished with 18 points. Emma Humphres nailed two three-pointers and finished with eight points for the game. Senior Mary Morgan Clingan hit a three and scored seven points for the game. Sarah Johnson scored seven, and Rayleigh Guin and Hailey Cantrell each nailed a three for the Red Devils.

    Vina 61, Waterloo 22

    Vina put on a scoring display on Senior Night, easily defeating Waterloo 61-22.

    In the first quarter, the Lady Red Devils hit six three pointers. Four of those came in from Emma Humphres, who finished with 22 points. Vina would lead 24-7 after first period. In the second quarter Humphres put up eight more points, and Kaitlyn King added four of her 11 points as Vina took a 39-8 lead in at halftime. In the third quarter, Abby Hester chipped in seven of her 14 points, and Mary Morgan Clingan scored all six of her points as the Lady Red Devils increased their lead to 56-16. Clingan has been a consistent defensive player all year for Vina and one of the keys to their success. Gracie Raper added six points, and Sarah Johnson contributed two points.

    Phillips 69, Tharptown 51

    The Phillips Bears had too much firepower for the Tharptown Wildcats to overcome last week in a 69-51 area loss.

    Phillips stormed out to a 17-8 first quarter lead. Tharptown played a solid second quarter to keep the game within reach, with the Bears holding a 33-25 halftime advantage. The Bears extended their lead with a solid third quarter, outscoring Tharptown 18-8 to make the score 51-33 at the end of the third quarter. The Bears would cruise to the win in the fourth quarter.

    Catie Dawson led Tharptown with 18 points. Aly Vandiver scored seven points. Brooke Daily and Adrianna Borden scored six points each. Klaudia Harris added five points. Anslee Bottoms had three points and six rebounds. Sierra Robinson had three points. Kaylee Bain and Amelia Dawson scored two points and one point respectively.

    Cherokee 45, Tharptown 43

    The Tharptown Wildcats held a three-point advantage over the Cherokee Indians going into the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold on, losing 46-43.

    Tharptown and Cherokee came out of the gate hot from the field, playing to an 18-18 tie. As the two teams cooled off in the second quarter, the Wildcats gained a one-point advantage over the Indians, 6-5, to take a 24-23 halftime lead. Tharptown extended their lead to 36-33 at the end of the third quarter. Cherokee stepped up the defensive effort in the fourth quarter, outscoring Tharptown 12-7 to take get the 45-43 win.

    Brooke Daily and Catie Dawson led Tharptown with 14 points each. Klaudia Harris added nine points. Kaylee Bain had three points, Anslee Bottoms two points and Sierra Robinson one point.

    Boys

    Phil Campbell 65, Lexington 35

    After a slow start, the Phil Campbell Bobcats took control of Senior Night and ran away from the Lexington Golden Bears 65-35 to close the season on good note.

    Lexington jumped out to an 11-6 first quarter lead before the Bobcats rolled off three straight strong quarters of basketball. Phil Campbell outscored Lexington 17-5 in the second quarter to take a 23-16 halftime lead. The Bobcats extended their lead to 41-22 in the third quarter, allowing the home team to coast to the season-ending win.

    Junior Peyton Thomas led Phil Campbell with 24 points, going 14-for-16 from the free throw line. Hayden Copeland followed with 12 points, and Thomas Baker had nine points. Daniel Uptain and Nate Owens scored six points each. Rhett Benford and Joe Hardy finished with three points each. Brody Nix chipped in with two points.

    Phil Campbell 67, Haleyville 57

    The Phil Campbell Bobcats had a stellar night from the free throw line, helping them take down their 4A rival Haleyville 67-57. The Bobcats made 25-of-31 free throws to secure the win.

    Phil Campbell sped out to a 19-9 first quarter lead. Haleyville outpaced the Bobcats 12-10 in the second quarter. Phil Campbell led 29-21 at halftime. The Bobcats duplicated their hot start of the first half in the second half by outscoring Haleyville 22-12 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 51-33 and cruised to the win.

    Gage Roberson hit five three-pointers to lead the Bobcats with 22 points. He was followed by Thomas Baker, who had 17 points, going 13-for-14 from the free throw line. Peyton Thomas added 16 points, going 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Rhett Benford finished with six points. Hayden Copeland, Joe Hardy and Brody Nix chipped in two points each.

    Tharptown 70, Phillips 39

    The Tharptown Wildcats posted a strong outing in their final area game of the season, easily defeating Phillips 70-39.

    Tharptown led Phillips just 14-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats created some space between themselves and their opponents in the second quarter, outscoring the Bears 15-7 to take a 29-17 halftime lead. Tharptown extended their lead to 47-32 in the third quarter before running away from the Bears in the fourth quarter, outscoring the home team 23-7.

    Mikey Rosson and Levi McCormack led Tharptown with 15 points and 13 points respectively. Carson Petree added 11 points. Cole Daniel finished with nine points, Matt Hall eight points, T.J. McDonald with five points, Misael Saldana four points, Joel Mojica three points and Braden Key with two points.

    Belgreen 64, Colbert Heights 55

    The Belgreen Bulldogs had a steady performance to put away the Colbert Heights Wildcats last week 64-55.

    Belgreen jumped out to an 18-15 first quarter lead and extended their lead to 32-25 by halftime. The Bulldogs added to their lead in the third quarter, outpacing Colbert Heights 15-12 to take a 47-37 lead into the fourth quarter.

    Brant Bragwell led Belgreen with 12 points. Adam Green and Mason Bragwell scored 10 points each. Jacob Mayberry pitched in nine points. Joseph Welch and and Payton Scott scored six points each. Seth Taylor added five points. Eli Hiser had three points and Grayson Moore two points.

    Belgreen 56, Red Bay 46

    The young, pesky Red Bay Tiger basketball team could smell an upset of county rival Belgreen at halftime, but a strong third quarter gave the Bulldogs an advantage the Tigers couldn’t overcome.

    Belgreen led Red Bay by just one point at the end of the first quarter, 10-9. Red Bay outscored Belgreen 16-13 in the second quarter to take a surprising 25-23 halftime lead. The Bulldogs outscored the Tigers 18-9 in the third quarter, giving them a 41-34 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs held on for the 56-46 win.

    Mason Bragwell led Belgreen with 16 points. Jacob Mayberry added 11 points and Adam Green ten points. Brant Bragwell and Logan Seay finished with five points each. Grayson Moore had three points. Eli Hiser, Seth Taylor and Joseph Welch scored two points each for the Bulldogs.

    Colton Corum led Red Bay with 15 points. Peyton Green added 11 points. Levi McNatt had nine points, Gath Weatherford six points, and Hunter Bays three points.

    Covenant Christian 61, Belgreen 57

    The Covenant Christian Eagles, led by 11 fourth quarter points by Titus Griffin, topped the Belgreen Bulldogs for the second time this season 61-57.

    Belgreen raced out to a 19-13 lead over the Covenant Christian Eagles in the first quarter. Covenant Christian fought back in the second quarter to cut Belgreen’s lead to two points 30-28. The Eagles gained a little more ground in the third quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 18-17 to cut Belgreen’s lead to 47-46 heading into the fourth quarter. Covenant Christian outpaced Belgreen 15-10 in the final period of play to get the come-from-behind win.

    Mason Bragwell led Belgreen with 15 points. Grayson Moore added eight points, Logan Seay had seven points, Brant Bragwell and Adam Green scored six points each, Jacob Mayberry had five points, Seth Taylor and Payton Scott scored four points each, and Joseph Welch added two points.

    Cherokee 66, Tharptown 59

    The Tharptown Wildcats couldn’t hold on to a sizeable first quarter lead as the Cherokee Indians chipped away for the eventual 66-59 win.

    Tharptown jumped out to 17-9 first quarter lead. Cherokee responded with a big second quarter of their own, outscoring Tharptown 18-8 to take a 27-25 halftime lead. Tharptown retook the lead in the third quarter outpacing the Indians 18-15 to take a one point lead into the fourth quarter 44-43. Javar Strong scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to help Cherokee outscore Tharptown 23-15 and get the win.

    Mikey Rosson led Tharptown with 22 points. Cole Daniel added nine points, Matt Hall eight points, Carson Petree five points, Misael Saldana and Braden Key scored four points each, T.J. McDonald had three points, and Dakota Nolen and Alex Argueta contributed two points each.
