    County basketball round-up: Big wins for PC boys

    Jessica Wilson nailed five three-pointers to surpass the 1,000 career point mark and help lead Tharptown to a big 61-42 win recently.

    Jessica Wilson nailed five three-pointers to surpass the 1,000 career point mark and help lead Tharptown to a big 61-42 win recently.

    Boys

    Phil Campbell 68, Lamar County 52

    The Phil Campbell Bobcats netted an easy area win just two days before Christmas over the Lamar County Bulldogs 68-52. The Bobcats got off to a fast start, outhustling the Bulldogs and getting several fast break layups.

    Phil Campbell jumped out to a big 16-5 first quarter lead. The Bulldogs cut into the Bobcats’ lead by two points, outscoring Phil Campbell 18-16, to make the score 32-23 at halftime. The Bobcats outpaced the Bulldogs 20-13 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 52-36 as they coasted to the win.

    Thomas Baker led the Bobcats with 19 points. Peyton Thomas followed with 13 points. Rhett Benford and Hayden Copeland added 11 points each. Gage Roberson (9), Joe Hardy (4) and Brody Nix (1) also scored for the Bobcats.

    Phil Campbell 61, Hackleburg 31

    The Phil Campbell Bobcats outscored the Hackleburg Panthers in all four quarters in a 61-31 blowout.

    Phil Campbell opened up a 17-10 first quarter lead and extended the lead to 32-17 by halftime. The Bobcats led 44-27 at the end of the third quarter and outscored Hackleburg 14-7 in the fourth quarter.

    Peyton Thomas led Phil Campbell with 16 points. He was followed by Jacob Anthony with 12 points. Rhett Benford (8), Thomas Baker (8), Gage Roberson (7), Hayden Copeland (6) and Brody Nix (4) also nabbed points in the contest.

    Belgreen 75, Tremont (Miss.) 47

    The Belgreen Bulldogs had no trouble toppling Tremont, Miss., last week, winning 75-47.

    Belgreen led 16-12 at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to 38-29 at halftime. The Bulldogs exploded for 27 points in the third quarter and limited Tremont to nine points to extend their lead to 65-38 and put the game away.

    Mason Bragwell led the Bulldog scoring with 20 points, followed by Adam Green with 14 points. Jacob Mayberry (8), Brant Bragwell (7), Logan Seay (6), Grayson Moore (6), Eli Hiser (4), Joseph Welch (4), Payton Scott (3), Shane Devaney (2) and Patrick Sykes (1) also scored.

    Covenant Christian 68, Tharptown 54

    The Tharptown Wildcats got off to slow start at Covenant Christian last week and could never overcome it, losing 68-54. The Wildcats were able to claw their way back to a one point deficit by halftime, but that was as close as they would get.

    Covenant Christian jumped out to a 21-12 first quarter lead over Tharptown. The Wildcats, however, outscored the Eagles 17-9 in the second quarter to cut Covenant Christian’s lead to one, 30-29, by halftime. The Eagles extended their lead to 44-39 at the end of the third quarter and steadily pulled away in the fourth quarter.

    Mikey Rosson led Tharptown with 24 points. Cole Daniel finished with eight points, and Matt Hall had six points. Carson Petree, Misael Saldana and Braden Key each had four points. Alex Argueta and Levi McCormack had two points each.

    Girls

    Tharptown 61, Covenant Christian 42

    Jessica Wilson nailed five three-pointers to surpass the 1,000 career point mark and help lead Tharptown to a big 61-42 win last week.

    Tharptown jumped out to a 16-9 first quarter lead and extended their lead to 37-25 by halftime. The Wildcats extended their lead even further in the third quarter, outscoring Covenant Christian 16-5 to give Tharptown a comfortable 53-30 lead heading into the final period of play.

    Wilson led all scorers with 21 points to put the senior at 1,0003 career points. Catie Dawson followed Wilson with 13 points, and Brooke Daily finished with 12 points. Ameliah Dawson had four points, and Aly Vandiver had two points. Linda Bahena, Sierra Robinson, Kluadia Harris and Adrianna Borden had two points each.

    Phil Campbell 62, Hackleburg 22

    The Phil Campbell Bobcats had no problem dispatching the Hackleburg Panthers last week 62-32. The Bobcats outscored the Panthers in all four quarters and limited Hackleburg to just three points in the second half of the contest. Phil Campbell had three players in double figures and nine players made it into the scoring column.

    Phil Campbell jumped out to a 17-9 first quarter lead and extended their lead to 36-19 by halftime. The Bobcats thoroughly dominated the second half, outscoring the Panthers 17-1 in the third quarter and 9-2 in the fourth quarter to get the easy win.

    Abby Davis led Phil Campbell with 16 points. Chole Roberson and Dakota Elliott had 11 points each. Darby Elliott finished the game with seven points, Anna Gunderman had six points, and Bethany Harris had five points. Maddie Riddle, Anna Benford and Megan Bullock had two points each.

    Vina 66, Athens Bible 42

    The 8th-ranked Lady Red Devils of Vina improved to 14-2 with a 66-42 win over the Lady Trojans of Athens Bible.

    At the end of the first quarter, Vina led 12-10. The Lady Red Devils broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring Athens Bible 24-9 to take a 36-19 lead at halftime. Kaitlyn King scored eight of her 12 points, and Sarah Johnson scored four of her seven points, in the second quarter for Vina.

    The Lady Trojans closed the margin to 40-27 after three quarters; however, the fourth quarter was all Vina, as they put up 26 points for the final period of play.

    Emma Humphres scored nine of her 16 points and Abby Hester hit 11 out 14 free throws in the final period of play. Hester finish with a triple/double: 23 points, 12 assists and 10 steals. Humphres finished with a double/double: 16 points and 11 rebounds. Gracie Raper chipped in four points. Mary Morgan Clingan had an outstanding defensive performance with ten rebounds and two points. Sarah Scott finished out the scoring for Vina with two points.

    Tremont (Miss.) 52, Belgreen 41

    The Belgreen Bulldogs lost a close game to Tremont, Miss., last week 52-41.

    Tremont led Belgreen 15-10 at the end of the first quarter, but the Bulldogs closed the gap to 29-26 by halftime. Tremont outscored Belgreen 12-8 in the third quarter to take a 41-34 lead. Tremont outscored Belgreen 11-7 in the fourth quarter.

    Katie Dempsey led Belgreen with seven points. Brianna Wood finished with six points; Shellie Barber and Emma Dempsey had five points each; Camie Terrell had four points; and Gabbie Moore and Megan Smith had two points each.

    Lamar County 68, Phil Campbell 52

    The Phil Campbell Bobcats got off to a slow start in a pre-Christmas area game with the Lamar County Bulldogs and were not able to overcome, losing 55-51.

    Lamar County jumped out to a 17-10 first quarter lead. Phil Campbell closed the gap in the second quarter, outscoring Lamar County 13-9 to make the score 26-23 at halftime. The Bobcats outscored the Bulldogs 13-12 in the third quarter to make the score 38-36 in Lamar County’s favor. The Bulldogs maintained their lead through the fourth quarter, outscoring the Bobcats 17-15 to get the win.

    Darby Elliott led Phil Campbell with 15 points. Abby Davis followed with 12 points. Dakota Elliott finished with eight points and Chloe Roberson and Carley Nix had six points each.
