Girls teams fight for strong start

    Phil Campbell 74, Tharptown 46

The Phil Campbell Bobcats’ pressure defense stymied the Tharptown Wildcats as they cruised to an easy win over their county rival 74-46.

Phil Campbell outscored Tharptown 22-6 in the first quarter and led 43-22 by halftime. The Bobcats had extended their lead to 65-40 by the end of the third quarter before throttling back.

Phil Campbell’s Darby Elliott led all scorers with 27 points. She was followed by Abby Davis and Dakota Elliott with 15 points each. Bethany Harris added seven points, Carley NIx had five points, Chloe Roberson had four points and Anna Gunderman finished with one point.

Jessica Wilson led Tharptown with 12 points. She was followed by Ameliah Dawson with ten points. Catie Dawson had six points, Annslee Bottoms and Klaudia Harris had five points each, Linda Bahena had four points and Sierra Robinson and Hannah Campbell had two points each.

    Belgreen 58, Colbert Heights 42

The Belgreen Bulldogs defeated the Colbert Heights Wildcats last week 58-42. The Lady Bulldogs opened the game strong and closed the game strong, scoring 21 points in the first quarter and 20 points in the fourth quarter in route to the win.

Emma Dempsey led Belgreen with 16 points. She was followed by Brianna Wood with 14 points and Gabbie Moore with 13 points. Jasmine Martin added six points. Emma Willilngham and Camie Terrell had four points each. Shellie Barber finished the game with one point for the Bulldogs.

    Covenant Christian 55, Tharptown 34

The Tharptown Wildcats were outscored in each of the four quarters by the Covenant Christian Eagles. Covenant Christian led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter and 23-15 at the half before cruising to a 55-34 win.

Jessica Wilson led the Wildcats with 13 points. Kluadia Harris scored eight points, Ameliah Dawson six points, Hannah Campbell three points, and Linda Bahena and Sierra Robinson scored two points each.

    Mantachie (Miss.) 57, Belgreen 49

A slow first half doomed the Belgreen Bulldogs against the Mantachie Mustangs. Belgreen was outscored 19-9 in the first quarter and 23-19 in the second quarter as they found themselves trailing Mantachie 42-28 at halftime. The Bulldogs outscored the Mustangs in the final two quarters 21-15, but it wasn’t enough to get the win.

Jasmine Martin led the Bulldogs with 13 points. She was followed by Gabbie Moore with 11 points. Katie Dempsey finished with nine points, Emma Dempsey had eight points, Brianna Wood had four points, and Kaycee Wilson and Cammie Terrell had two points each.

    Vina 48, Cherokee 43

The Vina Lady Red Devils continued their winning streak with a 48-43 victory over the Cherokee Lady Indians at Cherokee. Vina led 29-28 going into the last period and outscored Cherokee 19-15 in the final quarter.

Abby Hester led Vina with 16 points and eight assists. Sarah Johnson had nine points, followed by Emma Humphres with eight and Kaitlyn King with seven. Gracie Raper added six, and Mary Clingan chipped in two points.

    Vina 52, Marion County 50

Vina had tough time against Marion County. The Red Raiders led most of the game, holding a 48-42 lead with a couple of minutes to go when Emma Humphres and Kaitlyn King each sank a three pointer to tie the game at 48. After Vina forced a Marion County turnover, Abby Hester got fouled on a three point shot, resulting in two free throws for a Lady Red Devil lead of 50-48. With 18 seconds left, Marion County appeared to tie the game and possibly shoot a free throw; however, traveling was called on Marion County’s Emma Culp. The ball was thrown into Hester, who was fouled. She sank both free throws for a 52-48 lead. Culp scored at the buzzer for Marion County, but to no avail – Vina won 52-50.

Hester led Vina with 25 points, followed by Humphres with 16. King picked up nine points, and Gracie Raper chipped in two.

    Vina 52, Waterloo 34

On Friday, Vina traveled to Waterloo and won their eighth game of the season 52-34. Vina led 15-8 after the first period and never looked back. Emma Humphres led a balanced scoring attack for the Lady Red Devils with 14 points. Johnson, Hester and King all scored 10 points each. Gracie Raper chipped in six, and Clingan had two points for the final tally.
