Vina wins Veterans Day Tournament

After defeating Paint Rock 57-15 and Sheffield 46-26 Friday, the Vina varsity girls won three more games Saturday to start the season strong.

In the morning game, Vina won 47-34 over Smithville, Miss., girls. Vina led 25-20 at halftime and never looked back. Sophomore Emma Humphres led all scorers with 16 points, followed by freshman Kaitlyn King with 15 points and junior Abby Hester with ten points. Vina also got some very good defensive play from senior Mary Morgan Clinigan and 8th grader Gracie Raper.

In the afternoon game, the Lady Red Devils pulled out a last second win over the Lindsay Lane Lady Lions 49-47. Hester, King and Humphres all scored 13 points each, while Raper added six points, followed by freshman Sarah Johnson with three points – the last two of which were the winning points. Once again, Clingan gave an outstanding defensive performance.

In the night game, Vina defeated Waterloo Lady Cougars 55-25 to give the Red Devils a five-game sweep – a 5-0 record to start the season. King led all scorers with 20 points, followed by Humphres and Raper with 12 points each. Hester chipped in six points and had ten assists to give her 45 assists for the five-game sweep. Johnson added five more points for the final tally. Clingan picked up eight more rebounds for a total of 42 for the tournament.
