Basketball basics: Russellville holds youth basketball camp

The Russellville Parks and Recreation Department is holding its Sixth Annual Russellville Youth Basketball Camp July 7-9.

The camp will be held in the Russellville High School and Russellville Middle School gyms and will be led by Russellville’s new head basketball coach Patrick Odom with assistance from former Russellville High School basketball players.

“I do (the camp) because I want to teach these things that I wish I had known about the game when I was their age,” said Siran Winston, a former Russellville player.

Winston said the camp is not about flashy basketball but getting back to basics.

“The fundamentals of the game are being lost with kids today,” he said. “I think (the camp) is all about getting back to the fundamentals.”

The camp is for boys and girls in age divisions 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U.

Parents or guardians can go to the Russellville Parks and Recreation Department to register their children until July 2 or wait and register on the first day of the camp. Cost is $25, but the fee also covers the cost of breakfast and lunch for each camper.
