Red Bay girls win Area 16

RED BAY — The Red Bay Lady Tigers and Phil Campbell Lady Bobcats once again found themselves playing each other on the basketball court.
This time it was in the finals of the girls 2A Area 16 tournament, and it was Red Bay that came away victorious by a final of 42-19.
The Lady Tigers started strong by putting nine points on the board before Phil Campbell made its first field goal.
The Lady Bobcats battled back, though, and Red Bay’s lead at the end of the first was just 11-5, a much closer scoreline than the team is likely used to.
The second quarter went more in Red Bay’s favor, as the Lady Tigers led 27-10 at the break.
The third quarter stood out from the others because of a lack of scoring.
Both teams missed some shots in the tame eight minutes, as the two squads combined for just 10 points in the third period.
The score changed a little more in the fourth than in the previous quarter, but the eventual Area 16 winner needed only to hang on in order to win the trophy.
The victory means Red Bay will host 2A Area 15 runner-up Lexington tomorrow.
Kasey Sparks, Aloie Kennedy and Lexy Lindsey each had 7 points for Red Bay in the game. Elizabeth Wooten scored 6, Darby Madden and Carlee Berry added 4 each, Morgan Pierce had 5 and Holly Hardin totaled 2.
Autumn Thomas led Phil Campbell with 7 points.
