Final results from state golf tournament

J.R. Tidwell/FCT Russellville’s Ty Trapp practices his putting at Twin Pines Golf Course earlier this season. Trapp shot a 176 at state.

AUBURN — Day two of the state golf tournament in Auburn/Opelika at Grand National Golf Course remained much the same for the teams involved.

The Russellville golf team hit a 322 on the second and final day of the tournament, giving them a total of 654 when added to the first day’s tally. This meant that the Golden Tigers tied with Chilton County for fifth place.

“We really had a chance to turn in a good score with four holes left,” Russellville head coach Jason Haithcock said. “Most of our players were in the 70s, but our No. 1 shot an 84. We just slipped a little bit.”

Eli Hodges shot the lowest for the Golden Tigers with a 156, 12 over par. This put him tied for 13th in individual scoring in 5A.

Will Bragwell tied for 18th with a 160, Hagen Price tied for 23rd with a 163, Ty Trapp shot a 176, putting him in 30th and Blake Bendall totaled 193, good enough for 35th.

“[Grand National] is a great setup,” Haithcock said. “It’s a difficult course, but it was great experience for our players to compete at that magnitude.

“This gives us confidence to work hard during the summer and fall and come back next year and not be so overwhelmed.”

The Red Bay Tigers shot a 344 in round two, just three strokes over their total from day one. This meant the Tigers took fourth at the tournament in 1A/2A with a combined 685.

“I think [Grand National] is one of the most challenging courses on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail,” Red Bay head coach Johnny Cleveland said. “I thought the boys did well, and I’m proud of their fourth-place finish.”

Austin Sparks took third place in 1A/2A with a total of 151, just seven strokes over par.

Isiah Jackson combined for 175, putting him tied for 22nd. Tra Elliott shot a 178, putting him tied for 24th. Tyler Jeffreys totaled a 181 for 27th place, and Taylor Ozbirn hit a 208 for 36th.
