Tharptown girls top Vina
THARPTOWN| The Tharptown varsity girls defeated Vina 57-29 Thursday night.
The game was close halfway through the first quarter as Tharptown had a two-point lead at 6-4. The Lady Wildcats had extended their lead to 15-5 by the end of the first, and the Lady Red Devils would be unable to overcome the deficit in the game.
“Our girls off the bench did really well,” Tharptown head coach Chad Green said. “They put in some good minutes, and I was really proud of them.
Tharptown won the rebound battle in the first half, and Vina had trouble getting shots to fall.
Neither team did much scoring in the second quarter, with Tharptown outscoring Vina by just one point at 6-5. The Lady Wildcats took a 21-10 lead into the half. Tharptown began running a full-court press in the second half, causing Vina to give up several turnovers.
“It goes back to our team having trouble scoring,” Vina head coach Paul Humphres said. “Tonight just wasn’t our night.”
Tharptown continued scoring in the fourth quarter by playing fast breaks and making long passes. Vina was unable to answer, and the Lady Wildcats picked up the 28-point win.
“We have our last area game against Phillips, and we have the motivation to stay undefeated the area,” Green said.
Erica Valdez led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 12. Brae Sellers also hit double-digits with 10. Also scoring for Tharptown were Kamri Sears (9), Kassy Baker (8), Erika Sparks (7), Danielle Creasy (7) and Allie Chafin (4).
Miranda Howard topped the scoring chart for the Lady Red Devils with 12 points. Also scoring for Vina were Andrea Parrish (5), Morgan Humphres (3), Caitlin Benstine (2), Samantha Hayes (2), Sydney Upton (2), Hannah Baggett (2) and Jessica Pickle (1).
