Man indicted for sex abuse

A Haleyville man arrested in July after being accused of sexually abusing a six-year-old girl was indicted by the November grand jury.

Renaldo Diaz Perez, 48, 2706 Alabama Ave., Haleyville, was indicted on four counts of sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old, enticing a child to enter for immoral purposes and four counts of indecent exposure.

According to police reports, the mother of the six-year-old victim came to the police station on the evening of July 4 to file a complaint after her daughter told her about the abuse.

Phil Campbell Police Sgt. Terrell Potter said at the time of the arrest that the police notified the Franklin County Department of Human Resources and set up and interview with the victim when her mother brought the girl back to the police station on July 5.

The abuse reportedly took place in Phil Campbell and Haleyville.

Based on the interview, Potter said the Phil Campbell police department obtained a warrant for Perez’s arrest and arrested him at his home in Haleyville on July 5.

Franklin County District Attorney Joey Rushing said Perez’s case would most likely be set for arraignment on Jan. 4.
