Mother, son charged with drug use

The bookkeeper at Phil Campbell High School was arrested this past Friday after authorities discovered she had allegedly been smoking marijuana with her 16-year-old son.

Shelana Luck, 36, 2578 Nix Rd., Phil Campbell, was arrested on charges of furnishing a controlled substance to a minor, first-degree possession of marijuana, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, endangering the welfare of a child and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver said.

Oliver said Luck’s son, who is a junior at Phil Campbell High School, was also charged with first-degree possession of marijuana, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to Oliver, sheriff’s investigators received information three weeks ago that the juvenile in question had been selling drugs from his home.

During the course of the investigation, Oliver said officers were able to gain enough information, including information from undercover drug buys, to obtain a search warrant for the residence on Nix Road where the juvenile lived with his mother.

“When officers executed the search warrant at the residence, they found around three ounces of marijuana, morphine pills and drug paraphernalia in both the juvenile’s and the mother’s rooms,” Oliver said. “When questioned, they both admitted to smoking marijuana together and that they shared it with each other.”

Oliver said even though Luck was an employee at PCHS and her son attended school there, none of the information obtained during the investigation showed any illegal activity to have taken place on school grounds.

As following with procedure, Franklin County Schools Superintendent Gary Williams said a letter of his intent to recommend termination of Luck’s contract had been sent to Luck Tuesday morning.

Williams said Luck would have 15 days to request a hearing from the school board and if requested, the hearing would be set no later than 30 to 60 days later.

If no hearing is requested, the school board could take action as soon as the 15-day period ends.

Williams said Luck was placed on paid administrative leave pending further action by the school board.

No action has been taken in reference to the juvenile since the illegal activity was conducted off school property.

Luck was released from custody on a $4,500 bond. Her son remains in custody at the Tennessee Valley Detention Center in Tuscumbia.
