Vina rolls to 43-14 win
VINA — It took seven weeks and a few tough losses, but Vina has finally gotten into the win column after pounding Waterloo 43-14 as the Red Devils picked up their first victory of the season.
Vina (1-6, 1-4) got a 62-yard touchdown pass from Nick Schmittou to Clay Pierce and a 58-yard touchdown run by Andrew Hester to claim a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Waterloo’s touchdown in the second quarter to cut the halftime score to 14-6, but Vina added 22 points in the third quarter to seize control of the game.
Ethan Pharr scored on a 15-yard run while Schmittou connected with Cody Renfrow for the 2-point conversion. Renfrow then hit Pierce for a 45-yard touchdown pass while Schmittou connected with Pierce for another 2-point conversion.
Renfrow added another touchdown — a 16-yard pass to Pierce — to give the Red Devils a comfortable 36-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Pharr scored on a 5-yard run and Drake Hester added the point after kick.
Waterloo scored late in the quarter and added a 2-point conversion.
Andrew Hester was the leading rusher for the Red Devils, carrying the ball nine times for 142 yards. Pharr had 10 carries for 57 yards.
Renfrow completed three passes for 82 yards while Schmittou completed two passes for 62 yards.
Vina will travel to Tharptown next week.
