Meeting highlights service, awards

Members of the GFWC Book Lovers Study Club reported more than $2,700 was raised for community causes, and the chapter received multiple awards during the GFWC Alabama North District Spring meeting held at Faith Presbyterian Church in Huntsville.

Club membrers joined women from across north Alabama for the meeting, where reports, recognitions and district business were presented.

Leila Mowery of the St. Jude Clinic in Huntsville about options for families to receive specialized care closer to home.

Inside the Women’s and Children’s Center at Huntsville Hospital, staff treat children with cancer and blood disorders.

District business

President Gayle McAlister reported the bean lunch fundraiser raised more than $1,600. Walk to Wellness raised more than $1,000 for cancer patients.

The club’s self-defense and situational awareness class raised $165 for Safeplace. The club donated $500 to Fame Girls Ranch and provided gifts to the Country Cottage for a bingo party.

It also donated $150 to Alzheimer’s as part of the Mental Health Matters state president’s project.

The Book Lovers Study Club received “Living the Volunteer Spirit” certificate awards for Mental Health Matters, a Valentine party for seniors at the Country Cottage, support and appreciation of GFWC affiliate organizations, and the AFWC President’s Award of Excellence.

Members contributed items for the district’s silent auction, which raised $850. Officers also displayed items for sales tables.

Attendees heard reports from GFWC North District club presidents and Juniorette Club advisors about their projects and donations.

Emma McMasters of Decatur High School received the district scholarship. Martha Tucker, district scholarship chairman, reported McMasters received a $750 award and plans to attend Auburn University.

Candidates for the 2026–28 GFWC Alabama offices presented their credentials. The election will take place during the 131st annual GFWC Alabama Convention, scheduled for April 23-26.

Cynthia Geis conducted the installation of GFWC North District officers for the 2026–28 administration.

Donna Mahieus will serve as district director. Mary Ann Moon, of the Huntsville Woman’s Club, will serve as assistant director.

Leigh Ann McMahon will serve as secretary, and Debra Goble will serve as treasurer.

Following reports from GFWC Alabama officers, the President’s Project, the GFWC Capital Campaign and the 2728 Society, attendees shared a luncheon together.

The credentials report closed the district meeting. Silent auction results and door prizes were distributed, and members joined in reading the Collect for Clubwomen.
