Roscoe Dewey Fleming, 96, of Bear Creek, Ala. passed away Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011 at Lakeland Community Hospital in Haleyville, Ala.  He was born in Franklin County, Ala. on July 8, 1914 to John Thomas “Link” Fleming and Eliza Baker Fleming.

He served in the Army from 1935-1939.  He joined the Navy in 1940 and served during World War II receiving eight Bronze Stars for his service.  He also received the Purple Heart.  He served on the USS Sante Fe and the USS Wichita as a Gunner’s Mate First Class.

He was a Deacon of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Phil Campbell for many years.

He was a long time farmer leaving behind a legacy of the love for the land in his child and grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at Pinkard Funeral Home in Haleyville with Bro. George Jones and Bro. Bobby Poss officiating.  Burial was in Bear Creek Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elean Rich Fleming; son, Eddie Fleming and wife, Emily; two grandsons, Daniel Fleming and Kyle Fleming and wife, Paige; great-grandson Wyatt and a great-granddaughter on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and fourteen siblings.
