BIRMINGHAM – Beginning Monday Russellville native Mikey Santos will compete in one of boxing's biggest events – the National Championships.
More than 400 Olympic-style boxers from across the United States will meet in Denver as they attempt to earn a national title and a berth on the World Championships team.
Santos, who attended high school at St. Bernard in Cullman, is boxing in the 132-pound weight division. He will be representing Region 4 – which consists of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and the Florida panhandle – at the tournament.
Santos qualified for the National Championships by winning the Southeastern Association Championship and the Region 4 Championship, where the Southern Association winners box the winner from the Southeastern Association.
Santos has boxed with Round One Boxing in Birmingham since 2007 and is currently coached by "Diamond" Dave Dodber.
Men's final round action at the National Championships will be June 13.
