Vina captures NAC track championship

WINFIELD – The Vina boys track team recently won the North Alabama Conference championship, while the girls team earned a second place finish.
The Vina boys won with a score of 172 points to beat Phillips' 164.50 and Lynn's 142.50. Brilliant and Marion County rounded out the top five at the 17-event meet held at Winfield High School.
Nash Creekmore finished first in the long jump and triple jump and second in the 100 and 200-meter dash, Blake Thorn won the 800-meter run and high jump and Cass White (high jump) and Bryan Darracott (100 and 200-meter dash) each earned second-place finishes to lead Vina.
The Red Devils' White, Thorn, Darracott and Aaron Gray edged Brilliant by three-tenths of a second in the 4×100-meter relay and also placed second in the 4×800-meter relay with Dustin Milam, Zack Belle, Talon Vallejo and Gray.
In the girls division, Phillips held off Vina with a score of 221 to the Lady Red Devils' 153 points and Marion County's 100 as Brilliant and Lynn rounded out the top five.
Claudia Townsend won the 100 and 200-meter dash and the long jump, Emily Davidson finished first in the 1600 and 3200-meter run and Heather Thorn scored second in the 3200-meter run.
Townsend, Devyn Childers, Brooklyn Childers and Jessie Norwood turned in a time of 59.04 to beat Lynn's 1:00.91 to win the 1×400-meter relay, and Kay Raper, Heather Thorn, Davidson and Norwood finished second to Phillips in the 4×800-meter relay with a time of 12:31.
Vina will compete in the county meet at Red Bay Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
