BELGREEN – Writing students at Belgreen High School took second place in the Jacksonville State University Writer's Bowl Tournament Wednesday.
Six students from the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades participated in the tournament, along with 57 other schools from across the state.
The tournament had two sections: prose and poetry. The team competed together to write in both portions of the competition.
"The prose competition was just writing," Belgreen teacher and team sponsor Candi Hester said.
She added that the students were given prompts on what to write about for the competition.
"They [the team] had to write a rejection letter to a famous monster from a reality TV show," Hester said.
The team wrote a letter to Dr. Jekyll letting him know that he had been voted off the show, and why they are keeping Mr. Hyde in the competition.
"The letter is quite funny," Hester said.
The team took home the first place prize in the prose competition, and was awarded second place in the competition overall.
"The students must have done really well in the poetry competition even though we were not given an award in that portion because we received second place overall," Hester said.
She added that this was the first year for the school to participate in the competition, and will definitely return next year.
"I hope to take two teams next year," Hester said.
Members of the team are Justice Lane, Sydney Landers, Keri Metcalf, Shelby Johnson, Colt Hester, and Jessica Kirby.
