The Russellville varsity volleyball team beat Class 5A rival Athens 3-0 in a best-of-five match on Thursday's Senior Night.
The Golden Tigers, who have earned a spot in the Class 5A, Area 16 tournament Oct. 16, won the first game easily 23-13. Athens pushed Russellville in the next game, but junior Kayla King's serves helped the Golden Tigers finish off Athens 26-24 in Game 2.
The Golden Eagles rallied again in the third game, but Russellville held on to win 25-22.
Before the match, the Golden Tigers' five seniors were recognized, including defensive specialist Irma Lopez, setters and co-captains Anne-Marie Hall and Calli Davis and right hitters Lindsey Gardner and Derryl Gardner.
Class 5A, Area 16 includes volleyball powerhouse Muscle Shoals, Athens, Decatur and Russellville, which earned a trip to the area tournament last season.
