COLUMN: Condos, curses and craziness rule the day

By By Tony Krausz / assistant sports editor
Oct. 31, 2004
Join us in the Rants &Rambles offices, as we take another trip into that wacky world of sports.
Every week, R&R finds something that just tickles our funny bone, and we want to share it with you, the reader.
Now sit back and enjoy, as we rant and ramble about some recent happenings in sports.
Into the fray
Let the apocalypse begin.
Overjoyed New Englanders are running rampant all over Boston after their beloved Red Sox have finally won the World Series for the first time since 1918.
Very big plans here at R&R to celebrate the collapse of our beloved St. Louis Cardinals.
Everyone is pitching in to build a fallout shelter to survive the aftermath of the Red Sox winning a World Series.
YIKES!
Okay this is the last thing we will write about the 2004 World Series, and we mean ever.
Ugly four games by the Cardinals.
How can a team loss four straight games when the opposition commits eight errors in the first two games?
Maybe it had something to do with horrible base running and the fact that only two guys could actually hit the ball. We're just guessing here.
Florida zoo
Call us crazy, we don't care.
You're crazy. See like water off a duck's backside.
But when you get fired from a job like Gators coach Ron Zook, aren't you supposed to actually leave the job?
Much to the delight of Florida fans, Zook finally got the ax just two years after replacing the beloved Steve Spurrier.
Yet, he's going to finish the season as the Gators' coach.
Come on Jeremy Foley, if you are going to get rid of the guy get rid of him. Just hire Spurrier and be done with it.
Do it in style Bulldogs
Starkville is one of the spots the Birmingham, Ala., firm Capstone Development Corp. will unleash an ambitious project.
The company wants to help tailgating football fans, who are miles away from their home, have a more pleasant experience before and after college and pro football games.
Capstone will be building luxury sports condominiums in Baton Rouge, La., Green Bay, Wis., Manhattan, Kan., and Starkville.
The price is pretty steep, with the units costing between $150,000 to $600,000 for one bedroom and a large entertainment area. At least these luxury condominiums will be positioned a mile from the stadium.
BCS craziness
Ah, college football.
The pageantry. The history. The endless muckied-muck about how a champion is crowned.
It has been just two weeks since the first Bowl Championship Series poll came out, and the first one cause quit a stir with Miami rated above Oklahoma for the No. 2 spot.
Of course, that was rectified with the latest BCS poll, as the Sooners took over No. 2 and the Hurricanes fell to No. 3.
But don't worry there is still plenty to gripe about.
Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville has already started petitioning for his team, which is fourth on the BCS list, to have a shot at the national title gave if the Tigers run the table.
We are not saying Auburn wouldn't deserve the chance to play for the championship. But correct us if we are wrong, isn't Tuberville the same coach last year at this time complaining about championship talk being connected to his underachieving team.
