Halloween tourney to help young bowlers around the area

A number of items are vying for attention this week, some of which involve our local youth bowlers. Therefore, let me begin on that front this week.
First of all, don't forget the Halloween Mystery Scratch Scotch Doubles which will be held this Sunday. A portion of the $15 entry fee will go to benefit our local youth bowlers. Shift times are at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. with partners being drawn just prior to the beginning of each shift.
In this unique format bowlers alternate shots throughout the game. This is always a fun event, and we urge you to take part, have a good time and help our future grow at the same time.
Also, the local YABA is seeking the assistance of area businesses and individuals for the purpose of obtaining a badly needed computer. This is needed to allow them to keep up with the national office and other interactive organizations. The local chapter awards six college scholarships each year to our local youth. Any donation would be greatly appreciated. For more info contact Jeff or Shirley Gaines at 601-483-1424, or Bob or Robin Davis at 601-679-9972. You may also contact any member of the board of directors or Dixie Bowl Lanes.
The YABA is also seeking to extend a helping hand to those less fortunate during the upcoming holiday season. To the end they are asking local league bowlers to join them in this worthwhile endeavor by bringing a non-perishable food item with you whenever you come to Dixie Bowl during the next four weeks. All donations will go directly to the Wesley House to be distributed over the holidays.
Boxes will be placed at the front of Dixie Bowl for you to leave your donation in. All donations will be delivered to Wesley House on Nov. 22. The Eighth Annual City Mixed Tournament is already underway. Yes, you read right, already underway.
This year, the tournament is being run in a brand new format that allows bowlers to use their regular league scores on a given night to count as their city tournament scores. It doesn't matter if teams or doubles bowl in the same league or different leagues, or even on the same night. Simply declare in advance which league scores you want to count towards your tournament scores.
If you wish to come to the lanes and all bowl at the same time you may do so any time the lanes are available. Also, if you enter during your league nights your entry fee will be discounted. Teams on mixed leagues should find it a very convenient way to participate since your team is already together. And the fact that team members and doubles partners don't even have to be bowling at the same time makes it easy for everyone to enter. Take advantage of this new and unique opportunity to be a part of your tournament.
As in the past, the winners in both the team event and doubles event will receive a free entry into the State Mixed Tournament to be held the first three weekends in November at Rebelanes in Tupelo.
With only a little space left, the new lanes continue to take their toll on local scores during the first full week of use. Only Mike Cothern was able to overcome the new surfaces to crack the 700 mark with a 746 and Lisa Rickles cranked out the only 600 for the ladies with a 623. Keep trying folks. The rest of us will get the hang of it sooner or later!
That's all for this week. Until next week, good luck and good bowling.
