Clarkdale tops another ranked foe

The past for Newton High slow-pitch softball may not be impressive but the future is starting to look bright for the Lady Tigers.
Newton was shut out of the win column last season but will try to use the experience to help the young squad.
The Lady Tigers will rely on leadership from senior pitcher Kim Caraway. Newton will also get leadership from juniors Chotsani Henderson and Jazzlyn Wheeler.
Juniors Katera Evans, Tawaytha Evans and Victoria Moore will also supply the Lady Tigers with some leadership.
Speed should be the main strength for Newton High this season.
The Lady Tigers will try to improve on defense this year and avoid youthful mistakes.
In the infield, Wheeler will play shortstop and sophomore Dominique Murrell will play second base. Evans will handle first base, while Moore plays third base for the Lady Tigers. Asia Tingle will be the team's catcher.
In the outfield, Deonna Blalock, Evans and Henderson should play solid defense.
Unfortunately for the Lady Tigers, the schedule doesn't get any easier for Newton High this season.
Newton High will once again compete with Philadelphia, Lake, Enterprise and Clarkdale in division play.
The Lady Tigers started the season with a 13-3 loss to Sebastopol last Tuesday and will begin the division schedule Aug. 21 against Clarkdale.
